Sophie felt her heart flutter, as fast as the wings of a butterfly flying away from a predator. An intense feeling of passion and suffering filled her heart, as she listened to those around her throw his name around so non-chalantly.

She struggled to proceed with a wide smile painted across her face, as she could literally feel the tears well up in the back of her eyes. He had such wonderful eyes. Those eyes she saw every night whence she closed her own. She wished to never wake, and for her dreams to become reality.“Yeah, remember that time Joseph got into a fight with Tyrone?” Someone sitting by her shouted loudly.

Sophie flinched at the name, and felt a sharp stab located deep within her heart. She wondered if she’d ever be able to face up to her past, and be able to move forward. Her brain told her it was time, yet her heart begged to differ, and as such, Sophie continued into a downward spiral which nobody could pull her out of.

In the times when Joseph had attended her school, he had never been too popular, although he did have quite a large group of friends that pleased him. He was kind, caring and gentle, and always put others before himself. Although so, he had a reputation for being a little bit of a ladies man. Sophie watched as he made his way through girls, wondering when it would be her turn.

She met him, oddly enough, in the school library, whilst conducting some research for geography. His eyes glowed and she was immediately pulled in by his amazing sense of humour. She felt at ease around him, and they often exchanged witty conversation.

To be truly honest to herself, Sophie had known that from this point, he was what she wanted. Nothing made her happier than being in the presence of Joseph, and the constant flirting between the pair made things interesting. She felt they belonged together, and although she could never communicate such thoughts to him, she was comfortable in their current status. Not that either of them could define that.

There comes a feeling when you hold you breath under water, to simply see how long you can do it. Sophie constantly felt like she was holding her breath with Joseph, always waiting for a revelation, or just anything to happen.

Until the day when it was all over. Joseph was gone, and all hope had vanished from Sophie’s life. He left. Moved to a different state. Sophie was never going to see him again, and her heart sunk through the floorboards. What was she to do now?

She felt like giving up, throwing herself into the deep blue sea and leaving this world completely. Tears sprung from her eyes, as the memories of their happiness tormented her daily. Nobody would understand if she could tell them. Nobody would care.

Sophie laid in bed every night, and thought of nothing but him. She cried out her sorrows so that when she awoke, she could once again wear that deceptive mask of giggling happiness. She was always the forever laughing happy go lucky kind of girl. But nobody knew what internal suffering she had been through.

She thought the 5 years that had passed would diminished her love, and her pain. However, to no such luck. She was more in love with him than the days they’d conversed, and the pain was absolutely unbearable. And as she thought about whom she was in the world, she realised she only belonged with Joseph, and her daily life was nothing more than a lie. Sophie hoped that destiny would throw her a bone, and alleviate the utter despair and restlessness that she had endured, and still endures.

Sophie could only think of one thing to advise people on. “The people who seem happiest on the outside, are probably the most damaged on the inside. Don’t judge a book by its cover, and don’t believe people when they tell you they’re ‘fine’.”
