Frozen in an Instance is a poem I wrote as an assignment in one of the darkest places I have ever been in my life. A place that I would never know would follow me for the next ten years until
boiling to an ugly head. As I was unwilling to show emotions to write my assignment my teacher continued to push me to open up. Eventually this was created from the devastation and heartbreak I had
felt that fateful night.

Daylight turns to dusk
In the house the dog barks
I’m sent for him
We walk around the truck
She knows something’s wrong
He’s lying lifeless in the snow
Is he alive? I don’t know
Running faster and faster
Getting to the house out of air
Lungs hurting from the cold

I manage to call out
He’s lying on the ground
Mom calls 911
Compressions are done
Time seems to drag on
Still no help comes
The temperature below zero, it’s cold
Standing helpless I feel the crisp air on my nose
The sound of sirens in the distance
My mind is frozen in this instance.
