Part two of a short story

Chapter Two

It was a Tuesday, and I’d been out visiting clients all afternoon, and decided to drop into the office on my way home.  It was gone six o’clock.  Usually the office emptied by about half five, a few people stayed to catch up on invoices, orders, but generally the office is empty that time of day.  It had been a tough meeting – negotiations on new prices had stalled, why was it always the big customers that could never afford a price increase?  Anyway, I walked up the corridor to my desk, and I noticed that Maisie’s computer was still on, but she wasn’t in sight.  I scanned the office to see if I could catch her.  No one else appeared to be there.  I made my way to my desk, switching on the computer and waited for it to boot.  I then logged on and started typing up my report.

Deep in concentration I must have worked for twenty minutes before I heard a soft sobbing from the restrooms.  I looked up- maybe a cleaner, thinking I’d stay out of it.  The sobbing continued.  Frowning at the interruption, I got up and walked over to the restroom door, knocking softly, then harder.

“You ok?” I asked, thinking that’s a dumb thing to ask,  they’re crying for heavens sake.

The sobbing stopped, I heard a cubicle door open and someone shuffling to the door.  It opened a fraction.  Maisie poked her head round the door, her eyes all red and puffy, her mascara staining her pretty face.  Snap out of it, I told myself.

“Oh, it’s you, Danny” she said.

“Who were you expecting?” I said, trying to lighten the mood.

She burst into tears, flinging her arms round my neck, pressing herself close to me.  I closed my arms around her.  “What’s wrong, cupcake?” I asked.
“It’s Bill.  He’s been so mean to me.  He bawled me out in front of everyone.  I made a mistake, one little mistake, and he’s made me feel so useless”

My mouth found her forehead and I gently kissed her, muttering words to soothe her.  I took her by the arm and led her to my desk, sitting her down and taking a box of tissues from the next desk.  I went and fetched her a glass of water.  She drank thirstily, and dabbed at her eyes.

“I must look a mess” she said.

“Hell, even looking a mess you’re still the prettiest girl in the office” Smooth, huh?

She looked at me, “Thanks, Danny, you’re so kind to me.  I think if it wasn’t for you I’d walk right out and not come back”

I fell into those eyes. “Maisie, you can’t let a bully like Cole ruin your life.  I’ll have a word with him tomorrow, I’ll sort things....”

“No, you mustn’t do that!” Maisie insisted, “I can’t let you do that, it’ll make things worse if he thinks I’ve come running to you!”

“Relax, cupcake.  I won’t make a big deal of it”

Maisie took my hands in hers. “You’d really do that for me?”

“Sure.  I’d do it for any of the girls here, you know that, but especially for you” I smiled at her.

She stood up, held my face in her hands, and kissed me.  I don’t think I’ve ever been kissed that way before.  She took hold of my soul with that one kiss.  I held her close, ran my hands up and down her back, before resting them on her backside and pulling her tighter to me.

Maisie broke away, panting. “I’m sorry, Danny, I didn’t mean....”

“Don’t say it, cupcake. Just let me savour that kiss”.  I didn’t want her to shatter that moment for me. “It’s ok. I understand you’re upset and...”

She broke me off, “I’m just sorry I didn’t kiss you sooner”, and once again her lips found mine, those soft, warm, inviting lips, her inquisitive tongue, her roving hands.  She pushed me back against the desk, taking control of me, and I let her.
