This story is captured in a sliver of time.

I looked over my shoulder at the dog still watching the invisible cat waiting for attack, thinking of what his next move would be.

A Sliver of Time
By: Laura Johnson

The sunset looked as though it was a pot of gold in a shabby garage. The sand was warm and soft as I grabbed a pinch of it between my toes and lifted my foot into the air, opened my toes and watched the sand fall into a small pile under my feet.
I saw a dog in the distance watching the waves roar up onto the beach. The dog moved his head back and forth as though he was watching an invisible cat pacing left to right, like the dog was its pray, pondering the dog, getting ready to pounce.
I looked to my other side and saw a bird in the sand lying there like the warm sand was paradise to its feathers.
I looked at the small pile of sand next to my foot. A crab crawled out of the pile, slowly inching its way to the water as though its shell weighed three times the crab itself. Using its claws as feet, step by step it crawled to the water. When it got to the water’s edge, it hesitated as though it was checking to make sure the water was the right temperature.
I looked over my shoulder at the dog still watching the invisible cat waiting for attack, thinking of what his next move would be.
I picked up another pinch of sand with my toes from the ground. This time when I dropped the sand it blew to the left as a soft breeze past over the beach making a small pile of sand next to the other.
The sunset was lowering farther into the ocean, like a round ball of cheese dipping into garlic oil, making it scrumptious.
As I cocked my head, I quickly snapped it back to look at the sunset. I saw a dolphin jump out of the water. It looked as though it froze in time. The dog stopped watching for that invisible cat and looked at the sunset. The bird stopped singing its song and the hermit crab looked as though he lifted his head out of the water, struggling to stay awake one more minute to see the beautiful sunset.
All of a sudden the dolphin dropped back into the water. The dog right away watched for that invisible cat. The hermit crab fell into the water and the bird sang its song, once again under the beautiful sunset.
