Wolves of the World

How the hunger for peace gnaws at me, deep within my heart.

A hidden side, for the world strays in the opposite direction.

Why can’t they see! I cry inside.

Smothered, am I, drowning in a place

Where I don’t see a place for me.

Hiding beneath a veil of fear,

I don’t dare peer out, scared of being torn to pieces

By the wolves that float like wraiths through this world.

If they see me, I know,

They will circle me, biting at my heels,

Drooling for the blood of my heart spattering to the ground.

Crimson drops, joining the blood of others who have tried before.

A witch! they will cry in so many words,

Convinced of my wrongs but not seeing their’s.

As I fall like a sparrow struck from the sky,

They will cheer what they are doing, a victory cry.

I will be buffeted on the winds of the breaking,

Then forgotten and left to drift.

Bits of me will catch in lone trees, fluttering in a cool breeze.

Mayhap someone will find me and raise the word.

Lord bless that soul, for surely the wolves will come for them, too.

I know it is coming, the inevitable end,

But I will hold off as long as I can.

So I will hide here, in the darkness of deceit,

Hoping to avoid the wolves of the world.
