In my wake your strong and bold
as brave if not braver than any boy I know
but at night when your caged
I can see uncertainty in your eyes
Why do you fight so?
Who do you run from in your nightmares?
What do you battle in your sleep?

I hold you tightly and whisper words of comfort
but you only struggle more
your powerful legs kicking and hurting mine

Until I shove your head against my shoulder
refusing to let you fight alone
and as you finally recognize me
You let out a sigh of relief, your heart quieting in your chest
and you finally settle down for both of us to rest
