What would you do if you found an escalator at your office building which hasn't been functioning? Well, that's nothing out of the ordinary but what would you do if the management of the building decided to re-use the escalator and people started to disappear after taking it to go down to the 2nd floor after 12:00a.m.? Would you dare take a ride and figure out the mystery?

I've noticed the escalator for quite some time. Why isn't it functioning, it looked pretty new? Why won't they let us go downstairs by using the escalator? Besides, it would save us a lot of time while waiting for the lift. Anyway, the escalator is only from the ground floor to the second floor of the building. We had to wait for the lift from the ground floor to get to the second floor, which is a place where we go out to have our lunch at the picnic area plus, it's the shortest cut to get to the restaurants nearby.

I decided to have my lunch that day at the picnic area. It was a warm and sunny day and I waited for the lift as usual to get to the second floor. The lift was packed as usual and I was glad to finally get to my destination. The air was chilly that day but I didn't mind, it was still a nice day to have a picnic.

I went back to office around 2:00p.m. after enjoying the breeze and relaxing a while. I went to my office block and waited for the lift. However, I was a bit taken aback when I noticed that the escalator which hasn't been functioning for years was moving. There was a repairman and he informed me that they decided to re-use the escalator so that office workers wouldn't have to wait for the lift which was functioning slowly at times.

The repairman was ensuring that everything was working well. The escalator was able to transport anyone from the second floor to the ground floor. My office was at the tenth floor so I would usually only use the escalator to go upstairs or downstairs to the ground floor where everyone exits the building at a carpark.

That day, many took the escalator and it was convenient as we didn't have to exit the lift and wait for another lift to take us to the ground floor. The management had apologised countless times for the inability to repair and make the lift go straight to the ground floor, which was a little weird to me.

However, a rumour was spreading the next day about the escalator. It was said that some office workers, who had stayed back until 12:00a.m. to complete their work; had mysteriously disappeared when they requested for the lifts and escalator to function after they left back home. One of the security guards who received the phone call informed that he saw the group taking the escalator from the second floor during his patrol time. He even said that they were given half an hours time to leave the building and the lifts would stop operating. The other security guard who was on duty for the other block said that he didn't hear their voices when they left the second floor as the office staff were laughing and joking on their way back. There was only silence and their cars were still parked at the ground floor the next day.

Everyone regarded it as a mystery disappearance while some even said that it was a prank. I didn't want to believe anything since there was no proof or any other witnesses during the time of the disappearance.

The following day, I was too tired to go downstairs so I decided to have my lunch in the office. I've brought my usual fried noodles with soy sauce. My lunch tasted good that day even though I was feeling ill and didn't have much appetite.

That night, I was supposed to leave office early. However, I had an appointment with a colleague to watch a late night movie at 12:00a.m. It was still early and she had some extra work to do so she decided to stay back and leave at 11:30p.m. I was quite free that day and it was a Friday so I decided to accompany her for the night. My colleague, Amelia was doing some data analysing and I was sitting beside her and helping her sort some files while sipping a glass of hot coffee.

Finally, it was reaching 11:30p.m. and we decided to finally call it a day. The cinema was just opposite our office and it was a five minutes driving distance to get there. Amelia decided to send me back home later since she was driving that day. Her car was parked on the ground floor and when we left our office, there was thunder outside indicating that it might rain heavily later.

Amelia fumbled for her keys and realised that she had left them at the picnic area this morning while she was having breakfast. It was quite peculiar that she only just realised that it was missing. I decided to call the security guard and he answered. After explaning our predicament to him, he decided to accompany us to the second floor to search for the keys. When we reached the second floor picnic area, the security guard on patrol spoke to his colleauge and informed him about the matter. His colleague smiled and replied that someone had indeed passed a set of car keys to the management earlier and they handed them to him. He took out the car keys and asked Amelia whether it was hers. It was indeed, hers. We were glad and we thanked them. The earlier security guard volunteered to accompany us to the car park but we declined, saying that we didn't believe in the rumours.

Amelia and I decided to take the escalator down to the second floor. The escalator was slow and as we weren't talking, we were looking around and noticed that the lights on the first floor were not switched on. Amelia panicked a little and I told her to calm down. I reached out for my handphone and used its torch and realised that we were in completed darkness. There was no sign of the carpark and evidently, there were no cars around. It was strange since we were supposed to stop by the first floor and stepped onto another escalator to get to the ground floor. However, the escalator seemed never ending.

Amelia looked at me, I could see her questioning look by the help of my handphone's torch. "Lynn, where are we? Why is it so dark? I can't see a thing at all?" She started to shake and sob uncontrollably. I was trying to console her as I tried to use my spare phone to call the police. My first thought was to call the police but that idea wasn't going to work because we can't tell them where in the world we are. I finally decided to call the security guards but I realised that there was no signal for communication reception.

It started getting darker and soon, I realised that my handphone battery was starting to die down. We started to sweat since it was getting hot in the supposed car park area. Finally, Amelia let out a shrill scream and I nearly fell off the escalator in shock. "What is it?" I tried to flash my torch at her and she stared, white face at me.

"Lynn, I think there's something down there. I heard some breathing noises." I tried to flash my torch but there was darkness. Suddenly, deep within my heart; a voice sounded "Lynn, hold on to the escalator rail, don't let go; no matter what happens." I tried to calm Amelia and she finally listened to me. I told her to grabbed hold of the escalator rail and don't let go. She nodded violently as she was trembling. I grabbed hold of the rail tightly as the escalator started to go down again. Suddenly, there was a blinding flash of white light. I shouted to Amelia not to open her eyes. However, she started screaming again and there was a huge gust of wind. My hands were tightly on the moving handrail and finally, the light faded and I collapsed in exhaustion.

The next morning, I found myself lying down on the first floor escalator. The escalator had strangely stopped functioning and there were no signs of people arriving yet. Amelia was lying down at the end and I was just a few steps above her. We didn't go home that night and our parents were worried over us. The police were informed and they found us at the escalator steps. Amelia was shaken so I had to tell the story. Nobody really believed us and decided that we were sent to the hospital for further checkup. The earlier disappearance was considered as a mystery but nobody bothered to investigate the issue ever again.

The incident was long forgotten by many but it remained embedded in my mind until today. I didn't know exactly what happened but since then, the escalator remained under lockdown until today.

Maybe someone should just do a research on the building's history and its escalator to find out the truth.
