Ominous creatures lurk in the shadows of Central Station. Kate wonders if she is one of them. But her years of bruises and blood have left her no choice. Her heartbeat blares in her ears as she quickly scans the room. The man had told her to “blend in” with the “40s” Flash Mob. Kate pulls down on her fedora and pops the collar of her trench coat, worming her way through a swarm of choreographed 40s dancers.

Ralph. Ralph was the reason for all of this. He shed a cascade of tears the night he broke her ribs and blackened her eyes. He only regretted that she “pushed him to the edge.” Months of paperwork and police visits changed little. She moved and scurried down holes to hide. She was a lost fawn, trembling around every street corner. And, Ralph always found her. His too-white grin cracked his mask. His menace threatened to eat her. The last time, he shoved an unloaded gun into her mouth.

A hand clamps down on Kate’s shoulder, and she whips around. “Red Wolf?” the man with the hand whispers. “What?” A choir of vocalists drowns her response with “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” A heavyset flash mob-er bumps her shoulder, pushing her against the man. The man repeats himself as she whirls to face him. “Right. Code names,” she thinks.

“Yes.” She trembles, handing him a plastic bag of Benjamins wrapped in inky newspaper. She clears her throat and stands up straight. “’ Finished, then?” She asks. The man pulls a photo out from underneath his coat. Kate turns away in horror. “We got him,” he responds. “That piece of garbage won’t bother you again.” He turns on his heel. His echoed, clipped steps resound in Kate’s ears, rising above the singers.
