The Three Gunas of Life:

This is my article about three gunas (characteristics) of action, knowledge, food, and nature that are in our lives and within us. If one of the three gunas isn’t present we wouldn’t be able to live our lives. The three gunas are thamasic, rajasic, and satwic.
The thamasic guna promotes laziness and dullness. This may make a person feel depressed, damaged, neglected, or be denial. This shows that the person is underactive and not bothered but gets satisfaction from other people’s work. The types of food are thamasic is garlic and onions which are best avoided by spiritual aspirants. Fat and starch are also thamasic in the effects on the body.
The rajasic guna promotes being overexcited, manic, obsessive, greedy, and addicted. This may make a person feel anger and always wants to see what he/she can gain for him/herself. This shows that the person is overactive and will see what he/she can get in return by doing a specific deed. The types of food that are rajasic are condiments such as cloves and cinnamon. Food that has too much salt or pepper is also rajasic and should be avoided. As well as meat and eggs. As when an animal is killed, it is full of fear. These are transferred to us if we eat the meat. Furthermore, meat eating only promotes animal qualities.
The satwic guna promotes tolerance, and forgiveness. This may make a person feel and show love, kindness, and generosity. This shows the person has a balance reaction and will not expect anything in return by doing a specific deed. The types of food and drinks that are satwic is water which is part of the diet of any living organism. It is one of the precious elements of creation and is a basic constituent of most other fluids. We can survive without food for days but we can only survive without water for about four days. We cannot exist without water. It is recommended that we drink eight glasses of water each day. Milk and all milk products are satwic in nature as are fruits, roots and tubers for example, potatoes. Many vegetables are satwic. Out of the entire pulses green gram is the most satwic.
Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba an Indian spiritual teacher has said that drinking alcohol and intoxicants make us forget our true nature. It makes us forget god and we no longer have the conscious of what we say and do.
