The Fart of Fortune

Once, in a far away land known as Kilovia, there lived a very arrogant king named Zalabia. His arrogance made him think that he had knowledge almost in every subject matter. He believed he could do anything he wishes to do because of his great wealth and authority. However, there was one thing that worried King Zalabia; it was his only daughter Princess Sophia. Princess Sophia was so gorgeous that many princes from various countries proposed to her for marriage. However, King Zalabia wanted to give Princess Sophia in marriage only to the one who will outsmart him and be able to win a certain challenge. King Zalabia challenged the proposing grooms to ask him to do something which he cannot do. Princes and kings from various kingdoms and empires tried to win the challenge but they failed.

One day, a poor handsome young man entered King Zalabia’s royal court; the king thought that the young man was one of his servants because of the young man’s humble cloth. King Zalabia asked him “Who are you and what do you want?” The man bowed to the king and said “My name is Pacio. I am a farmer, and I came to propose to Princess Sophia.” The king said, “How dare you ask for this? Don’t you know that a princess should only marry a prince?” Pacio replied humbly saying “Excuse me your highness, but you said that you will give her in marriage to the person who wins the challenge. You did not say that this person has to be a prince.” King Zalabia thought for a minute and then said, “If you ask for something that I can do, I will order my guards to kill you because you dared to propose to my daughter and you are not from a royal family.” When the king said that, Pacio felt with great fear immediately, so an explosive fart got out of Pacio and shook the walls of the royal court. In this moment, a great idea came to the Pacio’s mind, so he instantly said, “Can you catch this fart?” King Zalabia was startled for a second; then, he laughed a lot until he fell on his back. After he finished laughing, King Zalabia looked at his cortege and said, “A fart defeated King Zalabia.” Then, he turned to Pacio and said, “I cannot catch your fart! You have my word, you smart lad!”

King Zalabia was glad that his daughter will have a smart husband who is able to make clever decisions on the spot to solve problems. Therefore, the wedding of Pacio and Princess Sophia was announced at once. King Zalabia said that the wedding will continue for seven days in which all inhabitants of Kilovia Land will be served the most delicious drinks and meals. And since that day, Pacio felt fortunate by this fart; and later, he gave all his children names that begin with the word “fart”: Fartello, Fartella, Fartadella, Fartino, Fartimelio, Fartiyana… and they all were fortunate and happy.
