Models that meet CEC criteria have energy conserving components to help you save electricity, which is not only important for you electric bill, but the environment as well.
The majority of electricity production as of 2009 was still coming from coal, a factor in greenhouse gas pollution that makes electricity production the number one source, even over automobiles. There is some controversy over the matter of greenhouse gases even being an issue, but the majority of studies show that they are not good either way. Even with modern forms of electricity production such as nuclear power create nuclear waste and conditions that will take thousands of years to become safe enough to expose to nature and humanity. It’s important we all make a conscious effort not only for ourselves, but for the rest of humanity and our planet as well.
There are some key things you can to lower the energy consumption of hot tubes by nearly half. For starters make sure it has a separate smaller pump that will be used for circulatory and cleaning cycles, this is much more energy efficient than having the same size pump run at multiple speeds. When looking at hot tubs look for models that have the most advance applied computer controls that give you the most control over the components. By having control over cleaning cycles of a hot tub and their temperatures as well, you can adjust the hot tubs functions according to your personal usage, not factory settings. It is recommended you have six inches of ridged foam around the outer casing to make sure extra heat doesn’t escape, and also to make sure the design has the pump, motor and heating element inside this foam, near to the tub itself so that useful heat energy can be transferred. One of the most important things to remember is to make sure the hot tub cover doesn’t become water logged, and should it start to wear down have it replaced ASAP with the highest R rating cover you can find. This will guarantee the energy rich air between the water and the cover wont escape.
If you live in a colder climate it might be smart to purchase a 220 volt hot tub that runs on 40 amps or more to make sure there is an effective energy supply to keep the hot tub heated while it is in use in colder weather, higher voltage and amps will also allow you to operate multiple components at once. Larger voltage doesn’t mean it will use more electricity in the long run; the job of heating will just get done quicker as compared to a 110.
