Look a Car!!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be in a story where someone you just met died right in front of you? Yeah I haven’t either. Geraldo No Last Name, By Sandra Cisneros is one of the most annoying stories I have ever read, and I am not someone who likes to read. The short story, “Geraldo No Last Name” by Sandra Cisneros shows  Little forms of Irony,  confusing POV, a horrible Plot, a theme that makes no sence, and Setting all in about less than two pages.
Firstly, the irony in “Geraldo No Last Name” was difficult to even find, Im not even sure if it qualifies as irony. “Pg.114” “The Hospital emergency room. Nobody but an intern working all alone.” I mean why would there only be an intern working all alone at the hospital? Its just odd how they would put that much responsibility onto one person. This was the only possible form of irony in the whole story. This is why “Geraldo No Last Name” has Little forms of irony.

Next, we have point of view.Geraldo No Last Name is based to be 3rd person limited. The whole story is the narrator talking about it “And she didn't know she’d be the last to see him alive.” (Pg. 114) “What if he had came?” Only the narrator is talking throughout the story, not Geraldo, not the creepy guy in the corner, just the narrator. This story has the most confusing point of view I have ever seen.

Now what do we have here? Look! Its my third reason, I think you should read it. The plot in “Geraldo No Last Name” things start to turn for the worst. Geraldo is unfortunately killed in a hit and run incident. At the hospital, “nobody but an intern working all alone, and maybe if the surgeon would’ve come, maybe if he hadn’t lost so much blood, if the surgeon had only come, they would know who to notify and where? (Pg.114) So this one person who’s name is never brought up meets some guy named Geraldo, and then ended up being the last person to see him alive after he was killed in a hit and run. The lucky person to see him last rushed him to the hospital where he unfortunately dies. At the hospital they never found out what his full name was, he didn’t even show in the system which leads to the possibility that he was an illegal immigrant. This states the horrible plot shown in “Geraldo No Last Name.”

Fourthly, the theme in “Geraldo No Last Name makes no sense what-so-ever. What it is, is “You should enjoy every moment like its your last, because you never know if there will be a tomorrow.”More confusing then anything I would say. I do have to agree that she never really knew Geraldo as she would have liked to, she never even learned his whole name. (Pg.114) “And how was she to know she’d be the last one to see him alive.” Geraldo wouldn’t even show up in the system when she took him to the hospital, which again gives people the idea that he might be an illegal immigrant. Thus, this story’s theme makes no sense and is hard to follow.

Fourthly, the setting taking place is mainly in the hospital, but starts out at a dance. The dance is where everything starts, and its where everything starts going downhill. Geraldo is hit and killed by a car. His new lady friend takes him to the hospital where only an intern is working all alone. “The Hospital: Nobody but an intern working all alone.”(Pg.114) Geraldo dies from blood loss, and the lady in the story is left with the thought of the unknown man forever burned into her memory. This briefly states the setting in “Geraldo No Last Name.”

So, have you ever wondered what it would be like to have someone you just met die right in front of you? Then read the short story, “Geraldo No Last Name” by Sandra Cisneros shows Little forms of Irony,  confusing POV, a horrible Plot, a theme that makes no sence, and Setting all in about less than two pages. From the hit and run, to his unknown last name, “Geraldo No Last Name” is the most annoying short story I have ever read. .
