I was old, older than any living thing

From a time when men had only begun to dream.

Since men had developed community,

I had been one of them. Yet not.

I was human. Yet more.

The focus of lore,

I was eloquence and honor,

All a page aspired to be,

I drew my sword

To slayeth thee, Foul Beast!

I witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations.

Vigilant in their dark alleys,

Defending the helpless, protecting the weak,

Silently righteous, I was

A shadow in the night.

Bold, just perseverance

Champion the cause, a living ideal.

Sacrificing life, my time, my being,

For the people I could never be,

A world to which I could never belong.

Forgotten, discarded by a mask of a smile.

The world can pretend without me,

It does not believe in me. So

I lie dead

Beneath the land

That has forsaken me.

I am the Hero.
