Dappled, golden sunlight
On a summers afternoon
Dancing through the leaves
Its smile lighting up the branches
Enveloping it in its warmest rays
Then one breaks away,
One leaf with a home no longer
Its strength grows weak
And its weakness grows stronger
Twisting, floating, making
Convoluted pictures in the air
Of what? Who knows? Then,
Off it goes again
Miles it is carried,
Does it have a thought?
Does it realize the peril of its journey?
Does it scream and beg for mercy?
Then it lands, with no sound.
Upon damp earth it makes its home
But still grows ever weaker, decaying like
The brain of a man who threw away his thoughts
The soul of a poet, unable to write
The brilliance of a painter, who has lost all inspiration.
And there it sits, hungry and lonely
Whilst Time sits and sneers,
And plays its cruel part.
The leaf dies away,
No pain, or so it seems
Its spirit does not linger,
And we just do not notice
That one fallen leaf
And that the terror of its story
Is what lies ahead of us
