we sit on the trunk,

count quarters and smoke the last of our cigarettes.

summer heat and nicotine

heavy in our lungs.

we watch the man,

guns holstered in his belt,

walk into the joint next to

the laundro-mat.

"there's only room for one in this town!"

bang, bangity, bang!

they dance like mexican jumping beans

before he shoots out the neon sign

glowing in the window,

"#1 r beef".
