Beckoning Milestones

Open the portals-
Unleash your pent-up, long suppressed words
Like a dam bursting in a flood,
Comes a cascading shower of tears.

So closed up inside,
Dragging a broken soul.
Tried, tested, mocked, ridiculed, beaten-
I could go on and reach from zenith to nadir.

Why am I here anyway?
You reach for the blade ever so slowly
So tempting is the sharp edge…
But you shrink back at the last moment.

You slap yourself in the face.
“Coward, whiner, a vacillating sissy”
You call yourself names and want to hide.
Sometimes I can hide, sometimes I can’t.

Along comes another milestone on your weary road
You look at it, your insides sag further
The added weight on your heart and soul-
You sigh heavily and continue to walk ahead…
