I can't do it!" Mari said, dropping her controller in frustration. She frowned and glanced at Jared. He smiled at her and paused the game.
"We can do something else, Its no problem. I'm tired of video games anyway. That's all I ever seem to do." He turned off the TV and stood up. He then offered his hand to Mari. She took it with a grin and he helped her to her feet.
"So what do you want to do?" Mari asked. She looked away from Jared's eyes. They were wonderful, but she just couldn't face them. She might melt. This was the first time she and Jared had ever hung out alone. She'd asked him if they could hang out, and luckily he had agreed. She was having fun already, video game failures aside.
"I don't know, we could go outside?" Jared asked, walking over to the front door and slipping his shoes on. Mari frowned.
"But... its hot out there." She said, aware that she was complaining way too much.
"Well, then take your jacket off, silly!" Jared said with a chuckle. He walked back to her and tugged on her sleeve playfully. Mari gasped.
"Oh no, please. Lets just stay in the air conditioning." She said, and played it off by bumping Jared's shoulder with her own. He barely moved, but laughed and pushed her back. She stumbled backward.
"Hey! No fair, muscles!" She said, pretending to pout. He grabbed her and lifted her off the ground.
"Man up, girly!" He said, and spun her around. Mari gasped and closed her eyes. She gripped Jared's arm fiercely. He noticed and stopped. As he set her down, a wave of dizziness passed over her and she stumbled. She fell on her butt.
"I'm sorry, Mari!" Jared said, sitting down beside her. "I play too rough sometimes."
"Its fine, Jared." She said. "Gosh, you tire me out though." She laughed lightly and fell back. Jared angled himself so that they could see each other's faces.
"Are you scared of heights or something?" He asked, tilting his head slightly.
"No, just of... I don't know, being handled? I don't like to not have power over myself."
"Noted for the future." Jared said. The future... Mari thought. Did she have one with Jared? A romantic one? She knew that she would be moving again soon enough. But wasn't it too late to shield herself? She'd already made friends.
"Good." She smiled at him. They sat in silence for a few moments. As the second stretched things seemed to be getting awkward. But then the silence was broken when Jared reached down and shocked her by poking her stomach.
"Hey!" She said, and unfortunately giggled. He laughed. She poked him back, a determined look on her face. A poking war ensued. Finally Mari threw a white flag, and Jared pumped his fist victoriously.
"Show off!" Mari said. He winked at her. They'd gravitated closer to each other now, and Mari could feel his warm breath hitting her cheek. She looked into his eyes, trying to calculate his thoughts. He looked back at her, searching. What could he possibly be thinking? Mari's stomach rose and sank as she debated. She knew what she wanted, right here in this moment with such a wonderful person so close to her. But what about the other half of this equation? Mari didn't know what to do. She fretted about this silently, and finally she couldn't take it. She simply averted her gaze.
Before she could move away from Jared, he caught her arm. His fingers pressed down upon a place where she had relieved her helplessness. She was helpless now as his lips touched hers. She let herself be absorbed into the kiss. Emotions toiled inside her, and she was happy. But she was also sad, and she didn't know why. But her stomach was sunk, her throat was dry. As she and Jared broke for a breath, she thought she felt warmness on her cheek. Had she been crying? But that didn't matter. This was good, and more than she deserved. The closeness between her and Jared was quickly becoming an addiction. She wanted more of him.
She pressed herself back into the kiss, her heart pounding and another tear streaming down her cheek. Jared's hands encircled her waist, and he pulled her closer. Mari entwined her hands in his hair. He pulled away, and she sighed.
"Mari, are we dating now?" He asked. She sighed.
"I don't know." She leaned in again and kissed him. He let it go for now, and let himself be pulled back in. Mari touched his shoulder, and let his warmth fill her. She wondered why everyone was always warmer than her, but that didn't matter now. Before she could even think of what was happening, Jared stripped her jacket off. Mari's arms immediately snapped to her sides, and she became unresponsive to Jared's kiss. Jard drew away, and grabbed Mari's forearm. Mari leaned in and kissed him again, and as he closed his eyes she was grateful. He wouldn't see the marks.
But he could feel them. His hands slid up her arm, but they paused when they reached the place. He stopped kissing her and pulled away again. "Mari, what is that?" He asked. She turned her head away.
"Mari, what..." Jared's voice was shaky.
"They look worse than they are." Mari said, keeping her face turned away. Jared was silent for a long time. Then he leaned down, kissed her cuts, and handed her her jacket.
"I'll take care of you." He pulled her into a hug, and she sighed against his chest.
