My views on family

?Thursday, ?November ?20, ?2014

I have heard a lot of people say things like \"you can't choose your family.\", or \"blood is thicker than water.\", and well, I believe that blood is thicker than water, I also believe that it's much easier to drown in, metaphorically speaking; we're talking about family after all, and your \"real\" family often holds some of the most important information about you, whether good or bad, and they can use that information to either help you or hurt you, and I suppose that just depends on what type of people they are. Therefore, your family can sometimes be the people who hurt you most, on purpose or not; 'family ties' bring together the rope of lies and secrets, of love and hate, and that rope can either be what hangs you, or it can be what pulls you up out of the dark hole you've been trapped in.

And as far as \"you can't choose your family.\", well, I call bullshit. You can't choose your DNA, that's for sure, but I'll be damned if you can't choose your family; because for me, and I'm sure a lot of other people, family is not always about a blood relation; it's who you create bonds with, it's the people that you trust, the people you would take a bullet for because you can't imagine living in this life without them, the people you can call at 4:00 in the morning to talk to because you couldn't sleep, and they won't yell at you and make you feel like a nuisance.

What most people call 'close friends', I would call my family, because when I'm close with someone, I'm close with them. And as far as some of what would be considered my legitimate family, well, quite a few of them have nothing to do with me anymore, and though I don't understand why they have chosen to exile my family and I, (i.e my Mom and Dad, and my two brothers), I try very hard not to let it get to me, and that's hard, not letting it get to me; because I know that we have not done anything to deserve it, and that's why it bothers me, I often sit and think to myself 'why us? We were loyal, we were always there to help, we didn't start unneeded drama, and yet, we were the ones you chose to shut out, to throw out, in a way.', and if I think about it for too long, my head starts to hurt, because I try so hard to ask a question that has no answer; so I have to stop and remind myself, that I don't have to call those people family, they have shown very clearly that they don't want to be my family anyways, they've showed that we're nothing more than strangers to them, and so, I guess they are merely just strangers to us now, too. I look at the people I love and who love me, and I forget about the people that couldn't care less about me, they're now way back on the back burner of my mind, which is where all those negative thoughts should be, burning, not burning like the fire inside your stomach that ignites when you're enraged or upset, but burning like the flames that drive your heart and your soul to thrive stronger, to love stronger, to want and to need, stronger. Once you learn to use negative energy as the fuel for the positive energy, you will become unstoppable. And if you find yourself feeling lost and alone, if you feel like you don't have family, look to the people who stand by you and stay there, those people are your family, you will never be alone as long as you love someone.

Agreed, I also have family whom I've chosen. I do have good relationships with (the majority of) my biological family but they aren't the only people I'd call family.
