She places aside her knitting. The old bone needles' worn down surfaces softly reflect the light as it flows in from the window.
She stands and wades through the puddles of wool that cover her floor, cling to every surface, stretch over every piece of furniture. She feels the skeins of wool on her back as she exits the room, feels their awareness, their impatience at this uncharacteristic pause.
She stands in the next room now, but she's forgotten what she came in for.Shrugging to herself, she tuns back towards her old chair. Sitting down, her bones seem to settle with a grateful creaking sound reminiscent of the upstairs floorboards when you try too hard to be quiet.
This is where she belongs anyway, this chair in this room. The rest of the house is filled with too many memories she isn't yet ready to face, better not disturb the dust.
Looking down at her hands, they hold the needles and the edge of the cloth. She doesn't remember picking them up again. The light from outside is muted by the glass, and the woman is grateful for the softness it lends to the room, time, herself. Edges seem blurred, but it is unimportant. The sun has held at the same comfortable angle for hours, days, weeks, perhaps forever. Though this too is unimportant.
What is important is the task she faces. On her on side, a blanket sits. It falls from the armrest to the floor, folding in on itself and back out again. A lifetime of minute impressions twirled together to make a string, knotted and twisted to make a life. On her other side, as much thread as she can knit, or at least as much as she cares to. Long and tangled and restless.
In between the chaos and the order, and old woman knits her memories.
