Rufus and the Honker Chorus
Rufus, a year old Canada Goose, wanted more than anything to be in the Honker Chorus. Members were selected each year from the group of one year old goslings who lived at Spring Lake.
Since Rufus made only squeaky noises like a mouse,  he decided to take voice lessons.
Professor Muse taught goslings how to honk well enough to be selected for the Honker Chorus. Rufus  went to see him.
" I want to sing in the Honker Chorus, Professor Muse. What do I need to do?"
The Professor smiled at Rufus and said, "I need to check your vocal chords. Open your bills." (The professor  stretched open Rufus's bill. He plucked  Rufus's vocal chords.)
"Now I will measure your tongue."( He measured his tongue.)
" Start on this note," the professor hummed. (He signaled Rufus to honk up  the scale.)
"Blow slowly on this candle flame without blowing it out." ( He timed how long Rufus could blow on a candle flame before it went out.)
The professor stood 50 feet away and listened to Rufus as he tried to sing a song. Rufus  couldn't project his voice that far.
"Okay, " said the professor, "I'll teach you to honk  for the chorus. Please follow these directions." (He hands him a list.)
Rufus gargled with salt water every day to keep his vocal chords healthy. He practiced wrapping his tongue around his beak to lengthen it while he slept at night. He stretched his bill open ten times each morning before breakfast  and in the evening after dinner. He honked up and down the scales until everyone around left with wings on their ears. He blew on a candle flame longer and longer each day.
And he practiced a song over and over until he knew it by heart. He sang it to his mother at fifty feet away.  As he sang he kept time to the music with his webbed feet.
Tryouts for the Honker Chorus were scheduled for Friday of the next week and Rufus rushed to be the first to sign up.  The first test was to honk up and down the scale in tune. The second test was to honk to with another gosling going up and down the scale keeping together.  As a final test, each applicant had to sing the song they had memorized for this competition.
The day of the tryouts Rufus woke up with a cold and he couldn't squeak much less honk.He gargled for five minutes, but still he couldn't make a sound. He was so disappointed that he cried, soundlessly.
"Come with me, Rufus, let's go see how the others will do." Mother Emma pleaded. "And maybe you will be better when it's your turn."
Rufus hung his head as he followed her to Professor Muse's outdoor theater.  "I'm going to sit  in the last row, Mom. I don't want anyone to see me."Rufus insisted.
Rufus and his mother watched each contestant honk up and down the scale and with a partner. Then each one sang a song by heart at fifty feet away.
During each song Rufus would keep time by tapping his feet. At the end of the tryouts Professor Muse asked Rufus if he made that tapping sound while the contestants sang their songs. Rufus felt bad and began to leave dragging his mother after him  with his wing.
His mother turned and  said, "I'm sorry, Professor Muse, for Rufus's disturbing behavior. " And to Rufus, she said, "Now you apologize to the professor!"
"No, no, Mrs. Goose," the professor insisted. "I liked what Rufus was doing." He then said to Rufus, "Will you be the Honker Chorus's drummer? Your tapping adds the perfect rhythm to each song. "
Rufus did a tap and a turn and said as his voice had returned, "Oh flutter, sure, I can do that!" And then he did a cartwheel and stomped three times.
From then on he was the drummer for all Honker Chorus  events.
