It has been awhile,
Since I had exchanged,
My little kid eyes for big kid eyes,
And started to notice things;

I finally could understand,
Why people went away and
Would not return to play,
That there was no peace;

I grasped discrimination,
And wondered why being different
Was so terribly wrong,
That there was no kindness;

I observed playground bullying,
Only to question how anyone could
Justify insulting another,
That there was no love;

I stumbled upon greed,
Asking why the rich won't
Lend a hand to the suffering folk,
There was no compassion;

Though I never noticed Death,
Death noticed some around me,
And I feared that my beloved
Siblings and parents,
Could be taken,
There was no mercy;

Yes, it has been awhile,
Since I had exchanged,
My little kid eyes for big kid eyes,
And started to notice things,
Though I wish the real world,
Hadn't tainted my childish innocence,
And the big bad wolf hadn't stolen
My teddy away.
