TJ Coon After the War   Carlos awoke from his cot in an old church where he lived with several other citizens. Carlos opened his footlocker and pulled out a small notepad. He flipped the page and it read May 3rd 2063. Carlos got up and grabbed a bruised banana from an old basket. He slipped into some clothes that he kept under his cot and threw a pistol into a burlap sac along with a can of tuna and swung it over his back.  Carlos opened the door to what was left of Morristown.  As he glanced across the rolling hills, he saw pieces of houses scattered everywhere. Carlos also saw standing houses, but those weren’t as common because not all of the families survived the American and Chinese war. One year earlier, all of the citizens of Morristown were escorted to a fallout shelter located in the town center.  It was very far down into the ground so the bomb wouldn’t affect anybody.Carlos strolled into the lobby of Headquarters Plaza so he could get a water bottle from the vending machine. He put in a crumpled dollar bill and waited for his drink. The dollar suddenly came back out. After many tries of shoving the bill in the little slot, he kicked the machine in rage, and a dead raccoon fell out of the bottom. As Carlos stormed out, he stopped because a drop of blood hit him in the arm.  At first, he thought a drop of water had dribbled from a broken pipe. Then he panicked. Carlos whipped out his gun. He scaled the stairs very carefully. He didn’t use the elevator because the cables  corroded when the rain got in the elevator shaft. His hands dragged across the chipping paint, and he felt the cold metal underneath. Carlos’ stomach was tying itself into a knot from adrenaline. He thought something or someone would attack him from behind. Suddenly, he heard three men yelling for help. Carlos ran into the room from where they were yelling. They had already lost a lot of blood, and they wouldn’t be able to be saved.  The closet broke open and a giant yellow monster armed with a lead pipe came running out.  Pieces of wood splintered Carlos in the face. The monster roared and pounded its fist into the wall, throwing pieces of metal and glass into the offices. Carlos was so shocked that he sprinted to his neighbor Alex’s bar, the Salty Splatoon.

“What’s wrong, Carlos?” Alex said. Carlos was panting and sweating.

“There is a big radioactive monster, and he is one of the effects of the nuclear bomb! He will multiply quickly!” said Carlos. Everybody learned about what would happen after the bomb hit on their Pipboy 3000s. A Pipboy 3000 is a screen that is permanently bolted on your wrist like a watch. It gets installed when you turn 10 years old. Alex pulled out a double-barreled shotgun and shouted, “If they get near my family I will kill it and skin it!” Everybody in the bar cheered.

“Wait!” Carlos said, “It is covered in armor and it can crush us with its bare hands!”

“I will risk death for the safety of this town!” Alex shot back. Carlos, Alex, and the people in the bar looked for people to fight. They finally found 10 more people. All of the 20 people got lead pipes, because guns were too expensive in this time. The mob of people found 3 of the Monsters on the Green in the center of Morristown. One monster spotted them and chucked a tree at them. It killed about 3 people. One man peed in his pants and ran away. He got hit too. Everybody charged at the monsters and started beating them. Pieces of people were flying everywhere as they ripped each other apart. One man hit the final monster in the knee with a club. The remaining monster fell on its hands. Carlos stepped on his head, while Alex drove a blade through his immense yellow neck.

“Ok, its dead.” Alex said. Everybody dusted the dirt off of themselves. A burning smell started drifting through the air. Suddenly, everybody started coughing.

“What is that smell?” someone asked, “I cant breathe!” Everybody grabbed their throats in an attempt to unclog it from the toxic fumes exiting the monsters body. Carlos felt his eyes burn, like somebody dropped the juice from a pepper into his eyes. One by one, each person dropped to the ground unconscious. Overnight, they all turned into monsters. In the morning, they picked up their clubs and started walking into the nuclear wasteland. They had no control over themselves anymore. Their main goal was to kill anything in their way now.

Meanwhile in the next town, people crowded around the bodies found in tollbooth at the entrance of the town.

“I wonder what happened here,” Said one man.

“It was probably just animal.” Suggested the man. Nobody worried about it, and everybody went home. They had no idea what was going to happen that night.
