A A A

Saturday 17th may 2010: 9.35am
I stood there in horror. It was right in front of me, and I was terrified. I couldn’t move. Not even a bit. I, Nicholas Hurly, had turned into a girl!
I stared into the mirror, my blond hair and pretty eyelashes were just some of my horrific features. As I was staring, my mum swept in. She pulled open the curtains, and the bright weekend sunshine shone in my hazel eyes. A sense of misfortune aroused me, and as I was deep in my world of thoughts, my mum said something that I would never forget,
“Nicky, you’re getting late for ballet class, wear this dress”.

She dropped it on my bed.

“W…what?” I asked in dismay.
“You don’t look good honey”, she said, “Are you alright?”

‘Alright’, I thought to myself. I mean, I had just turned into a girl, why would I be alright?

“Yeah…I’m fine…just fine” I answered.
“OK then…just hurry up, you’ve got 20 minutes left”.

I watched as the door slam shut. My dolls fell on the floor. My room looked so ugly. It had completely transformed. Before it had posters of footballer David Beckham and my hero, the assassin Mikey Shots. Now it was some posters of Barbie. My blue wallpaper was now pink. Everything had changed. It made me feel sick. This was the worst day of my life since I found out that my father ran away from my mum. I hate him for that. Though that was when I was small. I can’t remember that day, but this day would be hard to forget, let alone remember.

But forget all that. The question was, why?

Why would this happen to me?

I entered the toilet. Sitting on the toilet seat, I sat wondering just what had happened to me. Out of all people, I had turned into a girl. Gruelling thoughts went through my mind. Thoughts such as ballet class, or worse, school on Monday. What would my friends say to me? I could just picture it. Nicholas Hurly, the most popular boy in school, now the most stupid girl.

Then it clicked to me.

That’s why I had turned into a girl. That’s why I am in this situation.

I was sweating. It was as if I couldn’t breathe.

I hated girls. That’s why. This is a punishment for me. All those years, I hated girls…this is what I get now.

Flashbacks entered my mind. The time when I called my friend John a ‘girl’ because he thought my water pistol was a real gun. Or the time when I laughed at the most popular girl in school, Jessica, for claiming she would use her girl power on me. Or how about when I called the girls ‘stupid’ or when I called them ‘ugly’.

That is why I had turned into a girl. I would just rather turn into a dog!

There I go again. Mocking girls.

I heard the voice of my mum shouting. I had to hurry up. I quickly wore the disgusting ballet dress, and soon was off to class.

“How long is ballet class, mum?” I asked as we entered the car.
“Have you forgotten already, dear?” she asked, “1 hour”

This would probably be the worst 1 hour of my life. I just had to act normal. Just get on with my life. Pretend that nothing ever happened.

That would be hard.

We arrived at ballet class. I said goodbye to my mum, and entered. My mouth dropped wide open. I wanted to scream, but I couldn’t. There I saw all the girls from my class. Jessica, Polly, Samirah and the rest.

“Hi, Nicky!” screamed Jessica

I wanted to run. No. Just act normal, I said to myself.

“Errm…hi” I said.
Before Jessica could say anything, a tall, skinny lady appeared. Her thin eyebrows were raised and her red lips were about to move,
“Girls, hurry up, get to the side. Today we will learn the ballet twist. Now hurry up. Move it, move it!”

This is worse than I thought. I pictured ballet teachers to be kind and pretty. This one is a mean old sob. I read her name on the badge she was wearing, ‘Miss Meen’. Her name matches with her personality.

“Nicky Hurly, are you going to participate or what?!”

Nicky Girly more like. I quickly moved next to all the other girls.

As I looked behind me at the door, a strange man was looking inside.

“Hey, who’s that” I whispered to Jessica
“I don’t know” she replied, “He’s been coming here for the last couple of days, it’s quite strange”.

Strange indeed, I thought. As I looked back, the man was gone.

11.02am
After ballet class, I went outside to check if my mum came to pick me up. Her car was there. I jumped in.

“How was ballet class, dear?” she asked
“It was alright”, I replied.
“Doesn’t sound like it” she said

Well, I can’t even remember what we did first of all. Twisting or something like that. It was just that strange man. I couldn’t understand why he was there. Was he looking for someone? Or something? Jessica said she had seen him for the last couple of days.

Never mind that anyway. I don’t know why I was worrying.

Sunday 18th May 2010: 9.23am

I quickly woke up. I ran to the mirror as fast as I could. Please tell me everything is normal again.
No. I was still a girl. I wanted to scream in anger, but I heard my mum’s voice.

“Nicky, Jessica’s on the phone. She wants to speak to you”.
“Coming mum!” I replied.
Before it used to be Kay, John or Asif phoning me. Now its one of my worst enemies, or supposedly now one of my best friends, phoning me.

I ran downstairs to pick up the phone.
“Too late” said mum, “She had to go somewhere, but she said she’ll be coming down in a little while. I’ll be off to work in five minutes; I’ll be back by six. You be good okay. The food is in the oven”.
“Okay mum”, I said. I then ran upstairs.

13.18pm

As I was watching my favourite programme, ‘Killing machine’, there was a knock on the door. It was Jessica. I went downstairs to open the door.
“Hi Nicky”
“Hi” I said, “Come in”.

I took her into my room. She turned of the telly.

“You actually watch Mikey Shots’ programme?”
“Yeah, why not” I asked.
“It’s so gross, there’s all this blood and killing and stuff”.
“Well, I think it’s quite cool”.

I guess I’ll just have to watch the repeat tonight.

“So, what are you doing tomorrow?” asked Jessica.
“Well, just school and stuff” I replied.
“School? Its holidays now, have you forgot?”
“Is it?” I asked in disbelief
“Yeah, it was the last day on Friday, how can you forget?”
“I guess I’ve been a bit…”
“A bit what?” she asked
“Errm…never mind, what were you saying anyway?”
“Oh yeah, its prom night this Friday, you coming?”

Prom night? Everyone will be there! I didn’t know what to say. That means I would have to dress up and do girly stuff.
“Yeah, I might come” I said.
I got up from the bed, and as I looked outside the window, that strange man was there again. He was on the phone to someone. My spine tingled, and my heart pounded. What was he doing there? Was he following me?

Thursday 22nd May 2010: 4.51am

It was that strange man. He was right there. In front of me. It was too dark to see anything. Before I knew it, he pounced on me. I couldn’t see what he was doing. I then felt it. He was tying my hands and feet, and was ready to take me somewhere. I couldn’t move an inch. He pulled me towards the door. I wanted to scream, but I couldn’t. I tried to get away from him, but he punched my head. I felt really dizzy. He was all over me. I was breathless. He came again towards me, but I used my head to attack him. Finally, I let out a huge shriek,
“MUUUUMMMMM!”
My mum burst in.

“Nicky, what’s wrong?”
I looked around me. Everything was normal. It was all a dream. I sighed in relief.
“Bad dream, mum” I said
“Let me go and get you a glass of water, are you sure you’re alright?”
“Yes, I’m fine” I answered.

15.05pm

Jessica and I were heading to the cinemas, along with Polly, Hannah and Samirah. It’s funny how a week ago they were my worst enemies, and now I’m actually chilling out with them. I was still haunted by last nights dream, it was so scary.
“Hurry up, we’re getting late” said Jessica.
We were going to watch ‘Lipstick’. I know it’s girlish but I’m a girl now. I’ve just got to get used to it.

As we were walking, we saw John, my, well, ex-best friend. He came up to me. I felt uncomfortable. Me being a girl and him being a boy, it was just so different.
“Hi Nicky” he said, laying his hand on my shoulder.
“Don’t touch me”, I said, pushing him out of the way.
“Don’t push me you stupid girl!” he shouted.
Maybe he’ll wake up tomorrow and find himself to be a girl, I thought to myself. I’ll show him. Before I could do anything, he took my bag.
“Take that, you girly Hurly!” he said, as he ran off.
That’s it, I thought. I’m gonna show him. I ran after him, and went in with a huge karate kick on his back. As he fell on the floor, I punched him on his face. I never knew he was this annoying. I may be a girl, but inside I’m still a man.
As he stood up, I could see his lips were bleeding. Maybe Jessica was right about that girl power stuff.
“Wow Nicky, those were some moves” she said
“Never mind” I said as I took my bag, “Lets go, we’re getting late!”

Friday 23rd May 2010: 20:11pm – prom night

I looked at myself in the mirror. I looked good. The only dress I could pick out was my red one. I was ready to go to the prom. Maybe I looked too attractive for the boys. Well, I hated boys now, they can’t come near me, or I’ll do exactly what I did to John. The doorbell rang. That must be Jessica.

21:00

The school hall was packed. Students from all years were dressed up. The place looked so colourful. It was time to party.
“Let’s get in there!” I shouted.

22:43

All I can say is that we had a hell of a party! Dancing, eating, mucking, we were doing the lot! The boys could only watch and stare! They had the most boring time. It’s good to be a girl; maybe this is good after all. I can’t really think of being a male again.
It was really hot. I had to go outside and get some fresh air. I prodded on outside through the back entrance. That’s better. Nice fresh air. It was really quiet outside. Only a couple of people were standing around. That’s enough, I thought. As I was about to go back in, someone called me.
“HEY YOU, COME HERE!”
I turned around, it was that strange man again! That’s it. I’m going to get rid of this guy once and for all, Mikey Shots style. As he came running towards me, I kicked him in his leg. He shouted and fell on the floor. I looked around to see if there was anyone to help, but it was quieter than before. I examined the mans face properly, he was light tanned, and he had my type of hazel eyes. I figured there was nobody to help, so I went up to punch him again.
“Take some of my girl power!”. I punched him again.
“Stop Nicky, Stop! It’s me…you’re dad!”

I stood there staring at him. What was he doing here? My heart pounded. I shuddered at the sight of him.
“Nicky, listen…” he said.
“No you listen, where were you all those years? How could you leave mum like that?”
I felt so angry. How could he just pop out like that? He has no right to, especially after 11 whole years. It was quite scary and emotional though. What would mum say if she found out he had come back? She would not be happy.
“I was looking for you and your mother for so long. We used to live in London, now I found out you’re living here, in Leicester.”
“So you found us after 11 years?” I asked.
I wish everything just went back to normal. I liked girls now, so maybe I didn’t want things to go back the way it was. I didn’t want to be a boy again, I just wanted ‘dad’ to go away. I didn’t feel very well. All of a sudden, I spotted Jessica at the door. I felt dizzy, and the heat was also getting to me. Before I knew anything, I fell on the floor.

Saturday 24th May 2010: 9.35am

I must’ve fainted last night. Where was dad now? I better go and check. As I walked past the mirror, I stopped. I stood there in horror. It was right in front of me, and I was terrified. I couldn’t move. Not even a bit. I, Nicky Girly, had turned into a boy!

The end
