This I wrote after having a dream/Hallucination, in the dream I saw a fairy and as I describe the fairy turns out to be different...The fairies are all around us, if we look hard enough. This is written for my friend Kieran.B who has provided me with laughs.

Crows and Fairies by Megan Owens.

The three men looked up, one of them felt weirdly entranced by what they saw, the other looked strangely idiotic and the third looked ill. But all three of them were surprised. It was a fairy.

For years they had been searching for one, and only now have they found one. The fairy stared straight at them, managing to look in the eyes of them all at once. She reached her hand slowly down and pulled a little key from her bag. The fairy was no bigger then a finger but she certainly was more powerful then you or me put together. The men reached their hands out, trying to take the key from the small being, but she flew from their range.

Three sets of eyes watched the sparkling wings flutter, the smooth face smile, the flowing white dress and the twinkling key as they flew further out of sight. Then the fairy abruptly stopped, the key was turned inwards and she stuck it in to her abdomen. The key slid in easily as if there was a keyhole there. For a minute nothing happened, then the brightest little light beamed out from the key and radiated brighter then all the stars in the sky.

The fairy began to transform, the wings swelled and grew, and they shaded a black colour, with shaded edges. Then she herself grew, all over her body black feathers began to sprout, and they were slick and shinny. Her face began to change; a beak began to escalate under her skin until it eventually burst free from its fleshy prison. Within minutes the entire fairy was a beautiful black crow.

The three men stared and a whimper was all that was needed to scare the magnificent bird away. They watched in silence as the bird flew away, dissolving into the night sky with only a twinkle of a little key.

One of the men bent down and pulled from the ground one of the glossy feathers, he turned to his friends and passed the feather on. None of them dared to speak. The fairies had been a rare sighting and they only wished they hadn’t wasted it by staring, they missed the warm sensation they had over the look of the transformation.

The third man held up the feather to the sky, his entire hand shook. A ghostly wind swept over them and shivers ran their way down each of their spines, sending shock waves of tremors all over their bodies. Then almost as quickly as the wind had blown, a mist drifted in, it swirled around the ankles with mysterious intent. None of them noticed, each one was more enthralled by the feather then the last and each one of them were in a trance. Entirely fixated on the soft movements of the feather.

They stood for hours, staring at that sky. Not even the trees could sway the men away, not even the fireflies nor the dragonflies could pull a set of eyes away from the magic they had. And each and every night the men would gaze out at the sky, holding in their hands their own dreams and wishes in the form of a single black feather, whilst a glossy black crow with glossy black eyes watched in pity.
