My first gold medal

Two men left standing.
After three hours, two men remain,
but one gladiator will win the glory.
I eyed the other competitor,
unease growing in my gut.
Blood pounded my ears,
and I chewed my mouthguard
in angst.

I knew this was the moment.
The last fight.
The final showdown.
The moment of truth.
Somewhere faroff
a whistle blows.

Time stops, but when it resumes,
we're already grappling for control.
Weeks of training,
back breaking toil,
all come down to this.
This is what and why I do.

My ears ring as I'm taken to the floor.
But he's in my ground now.
Like a coiled viper
my legs pounced around his neck.

Then I realized-
I did it.
Checkmate.
He taps fervently.
I raise my fists.
Victory.
