Chest Pains

In the stillness of morning
Before the dawn’s first breath
I lay alone in the darkness
And contemplate my death

I’ve got a burning in my heart
A tightness in my chest
As I calculate my co-pay
I lay myself to rest

Yes, I have insurance
I still can’t afford the flight
From Hilo to Honolulu
In the middle of the night

Don’t call 9-1-1
To try to bring me back
It costs too damn much
To use their defibrillator pack

It just strikes me as crazy
For the ambulance to drive
Then wait for fifteen hours
For a doctor to arrive

So when I go to meet my maker
Greeted by St. Peter or St. Paul
I’ll ask why, in this day and age
There’s no single payer for all
