my first poem of this century*

(at least that's how the notation at the bottom of the page reads)

Living the life

Of comfortable loneliness

In a town not quite like home

Seeking self

Seeking truth of my holiness

Painting faith in a somber tone

My gospel

Of night preaches misery

While dawn delivers me healed

Cosmic indifference

Ingrained in my history

Divine purpose remains

Pahoa is no

New Jerusalem

We've no holy relics

No saint

And no shrine

All I want from this life

Is a companion or wife

Whose sentence

Runs concurrent

With mine

20 January 2000

(This was written before Father Damien was beatified by Pope John Paul II. So technically, I guess Pahoa does have a saint, as Pahoa was Father Damien's first assignment in Hawaii after being ordained.)
