Once upon a time in life,
I was clean and free from strife.

That day has long since gone from me,
hopes and dreams mere memories.

The time of life that has since flown,
mere love and joy no more my own.

As I lay here small and cold,
The people on the street so bold,

To pass me by here day by day,
their glances cold, their hearts uncaring.

To think that I among great men,
now left here ‘till God knows when.

And as the snow this Christmas Eve,
Softly, slowly, touches me,

The tiny flame of my small heart,
softly wanes and then departs.
