At a poetry reading

-

I went to a poetry recital yesterday,

Famous voices throwing soul

Using auspicious words:

Metaphor after metaphor.

Chefs of their own experience

Dripping the symbolic symbols

Of their own personal context.

So many visions de resistance.

-

I didn’t see those visions

I wasn’t wrapped in fear

I haven’t fought with weapons

Or marched in political fear

I didn’t fight their struggle.

I simply, wasn’t there.

-

Yet, I listened to their words

And I observed their passion

I sat amidst the audience

With all their finger snapping;

But the words were so big

And they said them so fast

And I couldn’t take it all in

I wasn’t given any time

To digest their complex past.

I sat with fragile, melted, imagery

And I couldn’t savour any of the tastes

It was too much, too fast and all in my face.

-

My soul grieved at that reading

When all those exquisite flavours

Were stolen from me
