~~The Most Exhausting Thing

Superstition says your love is thinking of you
When the clasp of your necklace
Kisses the charms hanging beneath your throat.
Yet, you’re not thinking of me, that’s your view,
So the old wives’ tale can’t be true.

Experience created the association:
You, with planes, trains and automobiles.
They remind me daily of you, and I feel insane,
Thus every day I have to stop myself again and again,
I have to cut the connection to you in my brain.

The radio never stops sending signals,
Echoing the love generated through the ages,
I have to stop my heart reacting, leaping,
I have to suppress it within me,
And chastise myself daily.

I doubt anyone would believe me,
But it has become my truth,
The most difficult, exhausting and
Draining part of my day:
Forcing myself to put my love for you away.
