A box of buttons

on the cuboard shelf

holds the secrets

of many small stories

each one simple

yet important.

There is the white button of a sailor.

it tells of ocean mist

and great big fish

the tinge of red on the outer edge

tells the tale of a ferocious duel

one of pirates strong and cruel.

The small blue one hiding under many

holds the secrets of a long forgotten nanny

It has tarnished from years of use

It tells of children impatient

yet sweet.

It even bears a faint scent of peanut butter.

A pearl button speaks

of a time of dancing and fame

spinning the tales of rich handsome men ,

and flowers falling

Finally after all the rest

a plain black button speaks

of a place in the trees

where tigers walked

and the elephants reigned

All this from a forgotten box of buttons

high on the cuboard shelf.
