In the novel Inside Out, and Back Again by In the novel Inside Out, and Back Again by Thanhha Lai, expresses how Ha’s life changed inside out and back again. Ha and her family had to leave their country because of the war that was going on, eventually Saigon is gone and no longer existed so they have no home to go back to. They move to America and then the family receives a sponsor from Alabama.

Ha’s life turned inside out at the beginning of the book. “Last September she would give me 50 dongs to pay for 50 grams of pork… Now it takes 200 dongs to buy the same things,” War is coming, struggling to feed themselves because the prices are rising because of the war. Another detail is “South Vietnam no longer exists,” Which means Ha and her family have no home to go back to. They have to restart their life in America. The last detail is that they were being limited to what they could have and can’t. “We were told to only sip water when needed most.”

Ha’s life turns back to normal, well kind of towards the end of the book. Her family gets a sponsor to go live in Alabama and have a good life in America. My first detail is about how they get a sponsor to go and live in Alabama, “Our entire family has a sponsor to Alabama.” Now she doesn’t have to live in a refugee camp and can live in a normal house. Another detail is how Ha actually is able to learn English and go to school, “Another bell, another line.” My last detail is that Ha and her family get to eat actual good food. “We live on rice, soy sauce, canned corn. Today our cowboy brings a paper bucket of chicken, skin crispy and golden, smelling of perfection.” Ha’s life is turning back again, such as her going back to school, living in a house and, eating really good food.

Ha’s life turned inside out and back again. It was dangerous but she survived and made it through with the help of her brothers; her mother and her sponsor in Alabama.
