Hello all,
Not really a script writer but I had an idea for a short anime movie and decided to share it. The use of camera angles and technical jargon is at best crude but I hope my description and dialogue is good enough to make up for my amateurish writing style. Constructive criticism would be great. Especially if anybody reading this knows anything about writing a proper script. Any pointers would be especially good. Also feel free to rate it out of five. So I know for the future. Thanks

'Dark Manor'

By Shay S. Keleher

Opening Scene:

Music starts, classical, haunting string ensemble. On screen darkness and then in a flash of lightning a wide shot of, The Dark Manor. A sprawling Gothic hospital. On the vast front lawn is a single tree, devoid of leaves. Screen returns to black.

Etsu:

(V.O)

Yung Asylum. Or as I called it, the dark manor. My home. My prison. Its abandoned halls are now my very own hell. If only I had a match. I would burn it to the ground.

Lightning flashes again and suddenly standing under the tree is Etsu. Forever seventeen with raven hair. She is wearing a hospital gown. Close up of her face as tears roll down her cheeks. Suddenly her eyes widen in unbridled terror and she disappears in a cloud of black smoke. The screen returns to black and; Dark Manor: appears on the screen.

Second Scene:

On Screen; Tokyo General Hospital, 18 years ago. Fade from black to show the exterior of a hospital. Cut to interior of hospital. Close up of a door with an explanatory; Maternity, Room 402. From inside screaming can be heard. Door opens inward and camera proceeds into the room. Close up of Ren, mother of Etsu, she is flanked on either side by nurses, one holding her hand, the other wiping her forehead. A line of sweat dots her brow and her face alludes to a woman in the final stages of child birth.

Doctor:

(O.S)

Ren, you're nearly there. One more push.

Ren grits her teeth and gives an audible, final push. She finishes it and falls back onto the bed, exhausted as she completes child birth. The sound of her panting for breath can be very clearly heard. The sound is made harsher by the silence it accompanies. Determined, Ren struggles to sit up. One nurse rushes to the doctors side and wraps a newborn baby in a blanket. The other keeps to her post at Ren's bedside.

Ren:

(Panicked)

What is wrong? Why isn't my baby crying?

Close up of nurse holding a perfectly healthy baby. The doctor is standing close to her, inspecting the infant with a perplexed look on his face.

Ren:

(Desperate, on the verge of screaming)

Doctor!!!

The doctor takes baby Etsu from the nurse and approaches Ren.

Doctor:

(Apologetic)

Please forgive me. As far as I can tell there is nothing wrong with your daughter. I do not know why she isn't crying.

The doctor hands Etsu to her mother who holds her protectively against her chest. Image freezes.

Etsu:

(V.O)

I never spoke. Never cried. A thousand tests proved that the doctors who treated me were baffled by my condition. My mother and I coexisted in a world of near perfect silence. For seventeen years. And then she died and that world shattered.

Fade to black.

Third Scene:

A sidewalk, lined with Autumn cherry trees. A shadow is cast across the sidewalk and the foliage that covers it by the wrought iron gates that mark the entrance into the Yung Asylum. Off the low rumble of a cars engine can be heard in the distance. Eventually a black car turns into the street and comes to a stop under the tree. The engine is killed and a woman in a black powersuit steps out of the drivers side door. Her high heel shoes click loudly against the sidewalk as she walks to the rear drivers side door. Opening it she leans in and says something indistinguishable. At length, Etsu emerges from the car. With an aura of trepidation she looks up at the sign on the gate. She looks to Kyra, the social worker who has transported her to the asylum. With a flurry of hand gestures she speaks to Kyra. The subtitles appear on the screen.

Etsu:

This is so wrong. Please, don't leave me here.

Kyra:

I am sorry Etsu. There is no room at any of the orphanages in town for someone, like you.

Etsu:

Like me? Just because I can't talk I'm condemned to this place.

Kyra:

Truly I am sorry. I tried everything not to let it come to this.

Etsu:

But this is a place for lunatics and criminals. I haven't done anything wrong. This is not fair.

Kyra looks about ready to respond but at that moment the gates swing slowly open with an metallic cry of protest. As if the gates haven't been opened for a long time. Standing on the threshold between the gate and the sidewalk is Rein Li-ing. A short, portly woman in her late fifties to early sixties. She is the warden of the Yung Asylum. Close up on her face. She is scowling. Her lips are pursed. She is flanked by two tall, burly men in matching coveralls.

Rein:

(Monotone)

Life is not fair. I suggest you get used to it young lady.

Close up on Etsu. Her hands stop moving and her eyes moisten. The look on her face is one of hopelessness.

Kyra:

(Defensively)

There is no reason to scare the girl.

Rein:

(Curtly)

Your duties are completed. I will take things from here. Oh and I will not be told how to behave by someone barely out of childhood.

(To Etsu)

Come now.

Rein turns and walks through the gates without looking back. Etsu makes a move to follow but Kyra takes her by the arm. As Etsu turns back to face her close up as Kyra presses a piece of folded paper into the palm of her hand. Close up of Kyra leaning in to whisper something into Etsu's ear.

Kyra:

(Sadly)

Please forgive me. I feel like I've failed you. If you ever need anything, this is my home address.

At that moment the orderlies stepped through the gate. Each ones hands enveloping Etsu's upper arms and begin leading her in the direction just previously taken by Rein Li-ing. Kyra begins to follow but stops.

Kyra:

(Shouting)

Don't you hurt her. Don't you dare. I'll have both your jobs if you do.

Etsu:

(V.O)

I hated everything about my life right then. I hated Rein Li-ing. And the orderlies, who in my memories are uncaring, oafish clones. I even hated my mother for dying and Kyra for failing me. But most of all, for being unable to speak. I hated myself. I wanted to die. Be careful what you wish for.

Cut to black.

Fourth Scene:

Etsu sleeps on a cot in a dimly lit cell. A woman screams. An animalistic, unholy scream. Close up of Etsu's face as her eyes fly open. Light floods the room as the cell door opens and a troupe of orderlies and nurses run in. Approaching Etsu's bed and then passing it. Etsu's P.O.V as she turns to look at the woman she is sharing a cell with. She is the one screaming and writhing, as though she were possessed, upon an identical cot. The orderlies hold her down. Even though she is shackled to the bed with tan, leather restraints. One of the nurses injects the woman with a syringe. She falls silent and stops struggling. The orderlies and nurses leave as the drugs begin to take affect. The room returns to near darkness but in the moments before she lapses into unconsciousness she turns her head to look at Etsu and in a thick voice says;

Woman:

Damn this dark manor. If only I had a match. I would burn it to the ground.

Etsu:

(V.O)

Those words were the first and last that woman ever spoke to me. The next day they moved her to a different part of the asylum. I never saw her again. Never knew her name. But her drugged ramblings became my mantra.

Fifth Scene:

Etsu's cell. She is sitting on the bed. Close up of tears in her eyes. The door to the cell is open. Screaming and crying can be heard out in the hallway.

Etsu:

(V.O)

Once, in my head I compiled a list of the things I hate most. Even more than Rein Li-ing or all of the orderlies. Even more than the God awful smell of still living ghosts left to rot in their own waste. It was the noises. The screams. Lunatics shouting at the moon.

Rein Li-ing enters the room, again flanked by two orderlies. In her hand, draped by her side is a thin piece of wood. The woman walks until she is standing directly before Etsu.

Rein:

(Impatient)

Why are you sitting in this room?

Once again Etsu's response is in sign language. The subtitles appear on screen.

Etsu:

I don't belong out there.

Rein:

I disagree. The judge disagrees. So I suggest you stop sitting here feeling sorry for your self and start getting used to this facility.

She moves slaps the palm of her hand with the stick.

Rein:

(Threatening Whisper)
Or I'll give you a good reason to feel sorry for your self.

Rein Li-ing waits. Etsu makes no move to get up from her bed. Close up of Rein's face as she turns her top lip up in a snarl. Medium shot. Rein lashes out. With a loud, slapping sound the stick connects with Etsu's cheek and then again on the other side. Close up of Etsu's hands. They curl into fists. Medium shot. Her right hand shoots out. It finds Rein Li-ing's bottom lip. At this the orderlies spring into action. Each one grabbing one of Etsu's arms and pushing her down onto the bed. Medium shot. Rein places the tips of her fingers to her lips. Close up of her face as she winces. Medium shot. She growls an animalistic growl and pounces on top of Etsu. Her bawled up hands flailing wildly, pummelling Etsu with blow after blow.

Rein:

(With Each Hit)

Bitch. Bitch. Stupid. Ungrateful. Bitch.

Cut to black.

Sixth Scene:

Camera scans the day room. Where patients/prisoners are playing cards or checkers or painting. Camera finally falls on Etsu. She is looking out through the barred window. Her P.O.V the expansive front lawns of the asylum. With the single tree. Medium shot. Etsu turns away from the window. Her face is puffy and bruised after Rein Li-ing's assault. Suddenly a gunshot goes off somewhere outside of the day room. Alarms sound. Medium shot. A nurse takes hold of Etsu's shoulders and leads her out into the hallway. With a cursory glance she steers Etsu toward her room. As they turn a corner a man with a shaved head and hand cuffs on his wrists appears in front of them. In his cuffed hands is a pistol. He raises it at the nurse. She screams. The scream is silenced by a second gunshot. Having been shot at such a close distance. Her head explodes in a geyser of blood and brain matter. Etsu is covered in it. Devil Jao smiles a maniacal grin at Etsu.

Devil:
Shh.

(Laughs)

Etsu's P.O.V as she stares down the barrel of the gun. The muzzle flashes. The sound of the explosion is beyond compare. Medium shot. Etsu holds her stomach and slumps against the wall. Her blood trails the wall as she slides to the floor. Close up of Etsu's eyes. They are wide with fear and pain. And then the light goes out of them. Medium shot as she falls sideways. Devil Jao laughs again and turns his head to look at a small army of police officers. They are all armed with hand guns. Devil's body writhes with bullets as the police officers empty their clips into his torso. He falls to the ground in a bloody heap and eventually the hail of bullets stop. Camera looks down on Devil's body.

Etsu:

(V.O)

Fifteen bullets in all. How could he live? How when I was not so lucky? Was he blessed? Am I cursed?

Seventh Scene:

Darkness. Impenetrable except for the vague outlines of dead trees. And swirling shadows. Somehow even darker. The only thing that can be seen clearly is Etsu. She is still wearing the hospital gown that is the Yung Asylum dress code. Close up of her terrified eyes. Medium shot. One of the swirling shadows appear at her shoulder with the sound of howling wind. Etsu's hair lifts and dances as if she were caught in a storm. With a groan she turns around but it disappears. All of a sudden a vaguely familiar silhoutted form appears at Etsu's side. She whimpers again and moves to back away from the shadow person.

Ren:

(Whispering. Tormented)

My child. My poor, poor baby. How can it be that we are reunited so soon?

Etsu's eyes widen. In shock now as she recognises her mother's voice.

Etsu:

(Shocked)

Mo. Mother?

Etsu's hands fly to her mouth at the sound of her own voice. Ren lets out a strangled cry. Halfway between horror at her daughter's untimely death and joy at finally hearing her voice. A shadow hand reaches out and gently strokes Etsu's cheek.

Etsu:

I, I spoke. I can speak.

Ren:

Yes, sweetheart. Now you can.

Shadow things continue to swirl in and out of existence.

Etsu:

What are those things? Where are we?

Ren:

No one knows really. My grandmother, she could see things others can't, she used to tell me stories about this place. She referred to as the dark plain. Some place other than heaven and hell and earth. Those she called the shadow guardians.

Etsu:

Are you real? Why can't I see you properly?

Ren:

(Reassuringly)

You can't see all of me but I am here. I'll never leave your side as long as you are here.

Ren's hands clasp Etsu's. She dips her head and kisses Etsu's hands.

Ren:

I love you. I'm so sorry I left you alone. I saw what happened but there was nothing I could do to help you.

Etsu:

What do you mean you saw what happened?

Ren:

There's something you need to know. Every night. At midnight. We have the power to return to earth. We only get one minute. Then those, things, floating around us now, I call them shadow guardians, come and drag us back.

Etsu:

Why? Why are we here and not in heaven. Or hell?

Ren:

Because there are wrongs that need to be made right. I couldn't go any further until I knew you were alright. And you weren't.

Etsu:

(Intensely)

I know what I have to do.

Ren:

You do?

Etsu:

(Darkly)

They hurt me. It's like they were determined to make me miserable. And then they let me die. I have to make them pay. And then I have to burn Yung Asylum to the ground.

Ren utters a sound of strangled distress.

Eighth Scene:

Kyra's apartment. Her bedroom. She is asleep. The cell phone beside her bed goes off. She wakes with a start and reaches for the phone.

Kyra:

(Sleepily)
Hello.

(Sharply)

What?

(Tearfully)

How did this happen.

(Angrily)

Goddamn it?

Kyra sits up in bed. The phone beeps. It falls from her hands. She ignores it and buries her head in her hands. Her shoulders heave as she sobs loudly.

Ninth Scene:

Close up of a digital watch face, it reads eleven fifty nine. Medium shot. One of the orderlies is shining a torch into the windows of cells. The dimly lit hallway he is in is deserted. Close up of watch as it ticks over to twelve. Medium shot. The orderly stops suddenly and stands rigid. Gingerly he turns around. Close up of his eyes, widening in fear. He lets out a choked off whimper. Medium shot. Etsu can be seen over the orderly's shoulder. Without seeming to move Etsu appears directly in front of him. She shields her eyes. Instead of brown, they are pitch black.

Etsu:

Would you mind shining that thing away from my face. My eyes are so sensitive to the light after being trapped in such darkness.

Close up of orderly, he swallows a lump in his throat. Medium shot. He lets the torch drop from his hand. Camera follows its descent in slow motion. It bounces loudly off of the floor once before rolling against a wall.

Etsu:

Better.

Close up of orderly's face again. It melds into Etsu's P.O.V as she experiences a flashback of him and another orderly rushing her. Holding her down so that Rein Li-ing could beat her up. Close up of Etsu's eyes as she blinks the memory away.

Etsu:

What is your name?

Orderly:

Wha' What?

Etsu:

(Impatient)

Your name. I want you to tell me your name.

Orderly:

Pao Nyng. You're dead. You can't be here.

Etsu:

And yet here I am.

Pao:

(Pleading)

Please, don't hurt me. I was just doing what Madame Li-ing ordered me to do.

Etsu:

That's a lie. I remember you smiling as you held me down on that bed.

Pao:

I, I'm sorry.

Etsu:

Not yet you're not.

Pao:

Please, please. Don't hurt me.

Etsu:

(Sweetly)

I'm not going to hurt you.

Pao breathes an audible sigh of relief.

Etsu:

(Monotone)

It's one of the rules. The dead can't touch the living. But there are ways around every rule. Listen to the sound of my voice. My thirst for vengeance makes you powerless against me. Take the shoe laces out of your sneakers.

Close up of Pao's hands shaking. He clenches them into fists.

Pao:

No, please.

Etsu:

It's too late for please. Too late for sorry. It's too late for me and it's too late for you. Take the shoe laces out of your sneakers.

Close up of Pao's hands, still shaking as he bends to undo his shoe laces.

Etsu:

(Menacingly)

Faster. I'm pressed for time.

Pao's doubles his speed and soon he stands up. The laces from both his shoes dangling in his hand.

Etsu:

Now, swallow them. Let me look into your eyes as they choke you to death.

Whimpering, Pao bunches up the shoe laces and puts them into his mouth. He makes a choking sound and his hands fly impulsively to his mouth.

Etsu:

Don't.

Reluctantly he lets his hands fall by his side. He falls to his knees. His eyes are wide, popping almost out of his head. Close up of his eyes as petechial haemoraging discolours the whites of his eyes. He finally drops, his body writhing spasmodically on the floor as he rapidly approaches death. A funereal stillness overcomes him.

Etsu:

Good.

Close up of Pao's watch. It clicks over from twelve to one minute past. Medium shot of Etsu as she disappears in a puff of black smoke.

Etsu:

(V.O)

Vengeance is a drug. Delicious. Addictive. How could I have known that it would turn me into something I don't even recognise.

Tenth Scene:

The dark plain. Shadow Ren appears at Etsu's side.

Ren:

(Horrified)

Dear God Etsu. What did you just do?

Etsu:

(Monotone)

What I said I would do mother. I made him pay. I'll make them all pay.

Ren:

I never thought for a second that you could mean something like that. That wasn't you. This isn't my sweet child.

Etsu:

You're sweet child is dead. And they killed her. I thought you would want to stand by my side as I exacted vengeance.

Ren:

How did you even do what you did tonight?

Etsu:

What do you mean?

Ren:

In all the time I've been here. I've never known anyone to be able to influence the living like that. How did you do it?

Etsu:

I just remembered what he did to me. How much I hated him. Hatred is power. I used that power against him.

Ren:

But for a child to feel such anger. I fear for your soul.

Eleventh Scene:

Darkness on screen. Radio static can be heard. Cut to roof of Yung Asylum. The second orderly, the other one who held Etsu down on the bed is standing alone on the roof, a cigarette dangling from his lips.

Radio Announcer:

It's twelve o'clock on the dot and...

The announcer's voice is lost in a fresh wave of static. Ryan Kee, the orderly picks up the radio and fiddles with the dials. Suddenly Etsu speaks from behind him.

Etsu:

That isn't going to help.

With a start Ryan turns around, letting the radio slip from his hand. He opens his mouth to say something.

Etsu:

Silence. I heard enough from your friend. Pao Nyng.

At the speed of thought Etsu moves to the edge of the roof. Her point of view as she looks down to the ground several stories below.

Etsu:

Ooh, we're so far up.

She looks to Ryan.

Etsu:

Come look.

Ryan hesitates but shortly can no longer resist the hypnotic suggestion and walks, slowly to stand beside Etsu. His P.O.V as he looks over.

Etsu:

Do you think you would survive a fall like that?

Ryan's eyes widen in terror. Silently he shakes his head.

Etsu:

No, I don't think you would either. But I don't think you'd die right away either. I bet it take a couple of minutes. Can you imagine that. Lying there, bleeding inside and out. Crippled, broken. Just waiting to die. Hoping for help. You could have helped me. Instead you held me down while I was beaten. And where were you when I was shot.

A gunshot rings out. Close up of Etsu's black eyes, reflected within them is Ryan, crying. Hiding in a supply closet with his hands over his ears.

Etsu:

Jump! And I want to hear you scream on the way down.

Again Ryan tries in vein to struggle against Etsu's wishes. Eventually though he succumbs and steps off the edge of the roof. He screams. Cut to lawn. Etsu's P.O.V as she looks up and sees Ryan falling. He hits the ground amidst the sound of cracking bones. Medium shot. Etsu moves to stand over the top of him. Blood trickles from the corner of his mouth. He makes pathetic gurgling sounds. And then, he slowly dies. At one minute past twelve Etsu again disappears in a shadowy fog. Cut to black.

Twelfth Scene:

The dark plain. Etsu is standing, surrounded by noticeably more swirling shadows than before. Shadow Ren appears and places a hand on Etsu's shoulder.

Ren:

Etsu Lee!

Etsu:

You only ever called me that when I was in trouble.

(Pause)

They all deserve everything they get.

Ren:

I don't care about them. I care about you. Do you see all the shadow guardians Etsu? Can you see how many more there are.

Etsu:

Yes I see them. What has it got to do with me?

Ren:

They're feeding off of your anger.

Etsu:

I've got plenty to go around.

Ren:

(With Absolute Desperation)

Listen to me Etsu. Your anger is changing you. You have to stop doing what your doing.

Etsu:

(Angrily)

You are the one who told me that there were wrongs that needed to be made right. How am I supposed to do that without making them feel what I felt in the last weeks of my life?

Ren:

(Shouting)

It's not about that anymore... It's about your soul. Those things, the shadow guardians. They aren't just shadows. They're damned souls. Once driven by thoughts of vengeance and hatred. Once they got their revenge they didn't move on. They lost their form, their salvation. They lost everything. And it's going to happen to you if you don't stop doing what you're doing.

Etsu stands silently. Watching the swirling shadows. Tears begin trickling from her eyes.

Etsu:

(Coldly)

Maybe its worth it.

Ren:

How can you say that? Please you have to...

Etsu:

I want to be alone.

Ren:

No. You are in danger and I won't just leave you.

Etsu is silent. Close up of her eyes, suddenly the tears stop and they go from her regular brown to the soulless black of her ghost form. She turns to her mother and in an angry, poltergeist voice says;

Etsu:

Leeaaave.

Etsu's hair blows as suddenly numerous shadow guardians surrounds her mother. She lets out a yelp of surprise as she disappears in their midst. Close up of Etsu as her eyes return to brown, but a darker shade of brown.

Thirteenth Scene:

Etsu is standing alone in the darkness. Shadow Ren appears and places a gentle hand on her shoulder. Etsu takes the hands and spins around to face her mother.

Etsu:

Mother. I'm sorry. I don't know what happened.

Ren:

It doesn't matter now. You're going to go through something terrible soon. But try to remember that I'll be by your side. The whole time.

Etsu:

(Fearfully)

What could be more terrible than what's already happening to me.

Ren:

Your funeral.

Etsu:

I can smell a rose.

Fourteenth Scene:

A cemetery within the confines of Yung Asylum. Etsu's coffin is lying on the lip of a freshly dug grave. A single white rose is draped across its lid. Apart from a priest and a couple of tired looking orderlies standing off to the side with shovels only Rein Li-ing and Kyra. Only Kyra is crying. Rein is wearing her uniform, stony faced expression.

Rein:

So terrible. We were making great progress with her.

Kyra:

I looked under the lid. I, I wanted to see her one last time. To tell her once more how sorry I was. What the hell happened to her face?

Rein:

When Devil Jao murdered her. He must have beaten her first.

Kyra:

(Intense Whisper)

That's a lie. I've seen a hundred bruises like that. They happened days before she died. And what happened to your lip?
