Equal Liability by Shea Ryhai

Poem by: Shea Ryhai

Summary

One of the last memories I have of my grandmother who died to cancer years ago, is the year before when she took me to an art museum. Just out side my brother and I found a pigeon tangled up in fishing wire. Its wing was tangled, and its foot had been chocked to the point of being useless. We cut the wire free, but still the bird would never walk or fly normally again.

Humans are guilty of taking no responsilbity for their actions, against nature, the world, and against each other.

Equal Liability

by SheaRyhai (c) 2010

Sky's the limit, that's how the saying goes,

that's why man built an airplane I suppose.

To travel around the world in a week or less,

now the world never sleeps like a night way express.

Better than yesterday, there's no line we won't cross,

another crippled pigeon in the litter we toss.

If it doesn't have a voice to cry out in protest,

then we'll easily ignore it just like the rest.

Each penny earned is more money to spend,

in a sea that's not equal we can pretend.

Yes a fish is a fish, but the shark always wins,

like death and taxes; and a politician's grin.

Chance is against you and has been from the start,

in this Shakespearian play we've each played our part.

Yes the mask was convincing but we choose to accept it,

but it's our children who'll pay, still we'll live to regret it.

War is a crime that we all helped create,

from our envy, our lust, greed, lies and hate.

We're each equally guilty regardless of our choosing,

when a good man does nothing, it's not evil that's losing.

Every child who fears one more day at school,

another fish left to swim in a killer sharks pool.

Faced against mockery, bullying, and resentment.

Still he takes it in silence, in self doubt built confinement.

Evil is a word used for terrorism and death,

but evil lives at home high off of alcohol and meth.

It's set on a pedestal in lyrics and songs,

paraded about by women in little more than thongs.

You can stop reading now, if you find this offensive.

If you think speaking against addictions is all too aggressive.

I hope you remember the next time you drink and drive,

that because of someone like you millions aren't alive.

I don't need to know your life, your problems, or secret.

Tell that to the dead who can no longer hear it.

Yea the whole worlds corrupted, eroded, diseased,

but you're not free of responsibility till death signs your release.
