the sweetest rose

a heavy smell of rust fills the air

flick of the tip of my tongue

reveals

bloody lips

death’s warm cardinal kiss

leaves a scarlet stream

trickling from my mouth

my skin is wet

slick with life

hands flutter to my chest

like birds they land

on ribs cracked open

liquid brown eyes roll upwards

lashes falter

and

two startled lovers stand above

each holds, in shaking hands

their bloodied share

of my shattered soul
