Into the Mouth of Madness


Thesis: Without the spark of enlightenment, reason fails to adequately see and thus we enter gropingly, into the ‘Mouth of Madness.’

Introduction


Similar to Toto, who chose to look behind the curtain of Oz, the Greeks began to seek beyond their mythology, the penchant motives and antics of their Gods. Some inquisitors began to look beyond them and began to observe the world around them and beyond. This simple act, coupled with their variant theories and postulations, led them and the rest of the Western Hemisphere into the ‘Mouth of Madness,’ because they, like us, were exploring, enquiring and acknowledging for themselves.


It is Socrates who begins the true epic of germinating the seeds of discovery; he embarks on this epic journey with a purpose. He spawns numerous inquiries and casts fundamental methodologies of deductive and inductive reasoning, which facilitates an individual ascending up a gauntlet of discovery. He achieves this by navigating and by veering his would be assailant ever upwards, towards a definitive end, where at the edge of a precipice, the prey is subjected to succumb to enlightenment.


Yet, since we have no remaining written works of his, and only orations of his are passed down, it is not into Plato’s cave, but declension into the mouth of madness that we descend in our quest for the answer regarding, “What are the governing dynamics.” This epic journey leads many follow on generations not the “Age of Enlightenment, but in truth, the ‘Age of Reason’.” Nonetheless, what has since transpired has led the Western Hemisphere and ultimately the entire world into the perceptions of reason without the madam known as ‘enlightenment.’ For without the spark of enlightenment, reason fails to adequately see and thus we enter gropingly, into the Mouth of Madness.




The Quest


Up until the time of time of Anaximander and other Pre-Socratics, the Gods ruled and carried forth all things. Since they could be understood to have human like qualities and desires, we could easily access their will and respond appropriately. With the advent of the questioning of ‘Life,’ ‘Reality,’ and what has become of ‘Self,’ by Anaximenes, there arises a new beginning, a need to ascertain the truth in a tangible way.


From this key figure, we begin an earnest quest for the answer to, “what are the governing dynamics?” It will be reason, which dispels mythology and causes man to ascend into the Cosmos searching for the answer, and into the very depths of his own soul, and there, within this cloud of unknowing, grasp a hold of who “He” really is and what we are all about.


By the time we reach Socrates, we are merely bantering back and forth arguments and counter proposals, much like today’s debates, with supporting replicative demonstrations. Nevertheless, the true journey begins with Socrates, and in particular, it’s the seeds he plants, in Plato. For it is in him that it begins to germinate, and within a couple of generations from Socrates, its manifestation is in Aristotle. It shall be his duty to present via the reproducible method of bringing about the certainty of a concept into an idea. This support is required to begin, and will manifest itself via a logic table and onto the placement of matter, place and time into its rightful categories.


The dilemma is that Socrates contends that virtue and knowledge are one. (W. Lawhead 50) Walter Hilton contends that virtue is separate from knowledge. Hilton states, “Knowledge is acquired where as virtues are bestowed. Knowledge and virtues however can be both applied in concert with one another.” He continues to point out, “for it to work; man must believe and also love it.” (Hilton) He continues to point out that for us to believe is to recognize and participate; to love is to manifest and perpetuate.


What Plato does for us is to begin to explore and present valid archetypes of forms and substances, which can be the essence of items and those, which transcend our nature collectively. Plato also addresses the issue of what he calls innate knowledge. Today it is commonly referred to as ‘intuition.’ The variance is not mere terminology, but actually, one of acquisition vs. inherent, and the source of the knowledge. In his work “Meno,” (Plato/ trans Grube 64) Plato brings forth the first inkling of a stem, when Socrates enquires “What then is this that the name and shape applies?”


Plato records for us the intent that Socrates is presenting in all assertions is the underling concept of enlightenment displaying the object, which reason explains and uses as building blocks or stepping stones. This is the cipher to the inference, proposed by the infamous Princeton Mathematician John Nash, when he asked, “What are the governing dynamics?”

In time, much of this topic, enquiry and understanding will be relegated to the immortals as we plunged into the Dark Ages. It will not reemerge into the fore front until the likes of an equal intellectual Titan begins to bellow. This is none other than Thomas Aquinas, a prodigy, under the tutelage of Albert Magnus, a.k.a. Albert the Great, of the Cologne University. Aquinas is one of the few, who not only undertake this extraordinary issue to task, but will also bear fruit in this endeavor.
