I stood in the doorway, and watched her folding clothes and packing them into her suitcase. My heart was racing and I could feel the anxiety setting in as my hands began to shake slightly, I shoved
them into my pockets to hide it.
“Did you get my message?” I murmured, she jumped, turned to face me and I saw the blush rise in her cheeks,
“How did you get in here?” She asked accusingly, looking like a deer caught in headlights, her hand frozen over her favourite red shirt, the one she had been wearing when I had first spotted her in the crowd. I walked inside the room and closed the door behind me, leaning against it, avoiding her question,
“Your roommate told me that you were leaving.” I stated, cocking my head to the side and looking at her, “Where are you going to go?”
“New York,” She mumbled, continuing packing with hesitance, “I have to leave” She added hesitantly, I felt my heart drop with that last statement and turned away from her, surveying her room, keeping myself busy in case I looked at her and she saw my heart breaking.
“I thought you were happy here?” I asked nonchalantly, disguising the hurt in my voice. I really had thought that I had made her happy, that she would want to stay with me.
“I think I’m falling in love with you” She cried suddenly, her voice breaking in the middle of the sentence, I spun to look at her and saw tears falling down her cheeks like raindrops on a window, I hurried over to her and pulled her into my arms. I felt her sobbing relentlessly into my shoulder, the tears seeping through my shirt and burning me like acid rain,
“Then stay with me,” I pleaded, rubbing her back soothingly. She leaned back in my arms and with a tear-stained face and beautiful sky blue eyes, she explained,
“If I stay, we’ll both get hurt. If I go, it’ll be the best thing for both of us” She looked up at me and I moved one hand to her face, gently cupping her cheek and stroking the tears away with my thumb,
“If you stay, I promise I will make this work. If you go, I’ll follow.” She shook her head ever so slightly, but I could see the hope forming in her eyes, “I can’t let you go.” I whispered, pulling her close against me and kissing her forehead gently.
