He couldn’t express the many ways that he missed her. He missed her eyes, chocolate brown and exposing every part of her soul he would ever need to see. He missed the way she flipped her hair out of her face when she laughed at something he said. He missed the way she squeezed his hand ever so gently if she was talking to someone else, reminding him that she was still thinking of him. He rolled over on the floor and thought about all the times she had sat in this position and tried to explain to him why it was more preferable than the bed. He looked at the map on the pin-up board, at the two pins that were stuck into it. One pointed out his location and one pointed out hers, on the map they looked almost close, like if they were people on the map they could stick out their arms and they might be able to touch. He stood up and ran his finger over the spot he knew she was and wondered if it was warmer there, simply because she shined everywhere she went. There were so many things he would like to say now, regretting his lack of courage when she had been here. He sat bolt upright as he heard the lock on the door click and then the door creak open. It was 2 AM, he wondered who it could possibly be, his mind filling with possibilities and trying to block out the screaming hope that it was her. There was a thud, and then it sounded like someone was sprinting up the steps. Like a dream, there she was, standing in his doorway, she looked beautiful, with her hair all a mess and her eyes frantic. There were a few beats of silence, as if they were just absorbing each other’s presence.

“I missed you” She breathed, he stared at her and was surprised at how everything felt easier now that she was here, he knew that this is what being with her would be like, as easy and natural as breathing. He stood up and crossed the room in two large strides, pulling her into him and wrapping his arms tight around her.

“I love you” He murmured, the words he had always wanted to say now falling easily from his lips, she nodded into his shoulder and wrapped her arms around his neck,

“I know” She whispered, “I love you too” He felt his heart race and then, he felt something else. The soft thumping of her pulse beneath his hand, the most important thing to him, it felt like he was holding it there. They stayed in that position, whispering sweet nothings to each other until the rhythm of their hearts slowed and started to beat in sync with the other.
