The ringing of the phone filled her with dread. She broke into cold sweat, and her palms felt moist and clammy.Nervously, she wiped them against her jeans. The shrill noise of the ringing phone pierced the quietness of the room.Outside,it was getting dark and the wind was blustering about fiercely, rattling the window panes. \"Please,\" she prayed silently,\" let it be something good.\" She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.Slowly she walked to the phone and picked up the receiver with shaking hands. \" Tracy...Tracy..I'm-I'm f-fin.. ,\" spoke a female voice from the other end of the phone.Tracy couldn't believe her ears.Relief flooded through her and tears fell from her eyes..like a dam had just burst.\"Jennie-Jennie..oh I can't tell you just how relieved I am..I have no words..I'm just so happy Jen..,\" she wept into the phone and sank down on the chair, the receiver falling from her hand and landing with a thud on the carpet below. Jennifer..Jennie for short..was Tracy's best friend since they were little girls. They had practically grown up together and they were more like sisters than friends. After they grew up they went their separate ways, heading off to different colleges and doing different majors. While Tracy was an elementary school teacher,Jennifer worked in the accounts department of a company. But even though they lived far from each other ,Tracy to the south of the country and Jennifer in the north east, their bond was as strong as ever and they were always tuned in to what was happening in the other's lives.Tracy had married her longtime boyfriend Ryan the year before, while Jennifer was still single.Everything was going.great so far, until a week and half ago, when Jennifer was involved in a horrific car accident while on her way to work, and had sustained severe head injuries. She'd been lying in a coma since then, and the doctors had said the prognosis was uncertain, and predicting the course was rather difficult at that particular point of time.So they were taking it slowly, day by day, monitoring her condition round the clock in the intensive care ward. When word of the accident reached Tracy, she'd felt the world crashing round her.Her dear friend, her sister at heart, was fighting for her life and she couldn't do anything but watch helplessly. She'd immediately driven the nine hour distance with Ryan, through heavy rains and.stormy weather. When they'd reached the hospital, they were met by Jen's stricken family..her mum and dad looked years older than they were, their faces drawn and haggard, the.light it seemed, had faded from their eyes.Every moment seemed like an eternity, the days dragged.along, with no significant improvement in Jennifer,'s condition. They held a constant vigil.by her side, taking turns in spending sleepless nights at her bedside, amidst the complicated electronic gadgets that the neurosurgeons.used to monitor her,the complex patterns which.only they.could.interpret.The room.would be quiet, save for the beeping.of the monitors.Their daughter lay sleeping, unaware of her surroundings, unaware of what those who loved her were going through.Numerous tubes were attached to her body, her head heavily bandaged. Her elder brother Alex, would spend every minute of his free time at her side too, rushing to the hospital after his day at work was over.He had recently become a father,a month before Jen's accident. From being over the moon after little Caroline's birth, the entire family had plunged into despair and sorrow following Jennifer's accident. Tracy spent a couple of days at the hospital with Jen's family, informing her school that there was a family emergency which she had to attend to.She was quite broken too,but she stayed strong for the sake of Jen's parents.Ryan was equally supportive and he stayed.for sometime before heading home for his job.Tracy prepared to leave two days later, after asking Jen's family to keep her constantly updated about her condition. With a heavy heart, she looked at her comatose friend and couldn't stop the gush of tears that sprang from her eyes.\" Get well soon Jenny,\" she whisp Ered, taking her friend's limp hand.in hers and squeezing it. She'd left the hospital in tears, and started the long journey home. It had been four days since she was back and even though she was physically present in her town of Greenville, her mind was hundreds of miles away, constantly worrying about her friend in hospital.\"Don't worry Tracy,\" Ryan would console her,\"Jen's a fighter. She's going to be alright.I know it.\" He tried to ease away her tensions and Tracy was really glad she had him by her side. Her parents were currently out of the country,on a vacation to Europe. They'd left just two days before the accident.Tracy hadn't informed them about it yet, because she didn't want them to worry. Tracy was brought back to the present moment.by the ringing.of the doorbell. It would be Ryan,coming.home.from work. She wiped her eyes with the back.of her hand.and hurried to open the door. \"Ryan!,\" she cried as soon as he entered.\" Ryan..I'm so happy..I'm so happy, I can't even begin to tell you how glad I am.\" she said, putting her arms.around his neck.He bent his head and kissed her gently. \" Well..well well..what do we have here? This is the happiest I've seen you in the past week.It has something to.do with Jen isn't it?\" he said, putting his arms around her waist and looking into her eyes.Slowly, she freed herself from him and led him to the family room and they.sat together on the sofa. \" You're right, honey. You won't believe what happened.Half an hour ago,I received a call from Jen!! She said..'Tracy,Tracy..I'm .\" the line dropped after that, but I'm positive.it was her voice! I heard her Ryan, clearly. She's awake..she's fine Ryan!\" she said, unable to keep her excitement down.Ryan leaned.over and put his arms around her and held her tight. He was as relieved as Tracy.\" That's the best news I've heard in ages Tracy!! See,I told you..our Jen.is strong.Didn't I? \" he said, kissing the top of her head.Wordlessly she nodded and snuggled closer.to him.Both.of them sat like that for a.long.time,watching the rain that had begun to fall outside.Later, they had dinner and were preparing.to go to bed when the phone rang again. \"I'll get.it,\" said Ryan, and.picked up the receiver.\"Hello,\" he spoke. And then as Tracy stood.watching, she saw the colour drain from his face ,as the receiver slipped from his hand. \"What is it? \" she squeaked, her throat suddenly dry and parched.and an.unfamiliar feeling.of doom.coming.over her.He stood still,not.moving,his.face expressionless.She.moved closer to him and tugged at his hand.\" What is it Ryan?,\" she cried, her voice rising.in alarm. Slowly,he looked at her,and whispered,\" She's gone,Tracy.\" \"Gone? Who's gone ,Ryan?\" she croaked.\" Jennifer,\" he answered,his.voice.cracking. \"Noooo!! No!! How can that be? She called me a while.ago..I.swear it was her Ryan..how can she go? No that's a lie.It is not possible..\" she cried.in disbelief,,feeling.lightheaded and swaying on her feet. Her knees felt wobbly and she almost collapsed to the ground, before.Ryan held her and steadied her. \" At what time did she call you Tracy? \" he asked.\" It must have been around six.\" she recalled. \" Alex called. He said Jen passed away at 6.05 this evening. She never woke up from the coma.\" he spoke, his voice barely a whisper. \" But the call...,\" Tracy swayed again, her ears not believing what she'd.just heard. Ryan carried her to the bedroom and laid her gently on the bed.She was hysterical now.He poured a glass of water and held it to her lips. She drank slowly, and crashed back.against the pillows. He climbed in next to her and held her, gently stroking her hair,tears.clouding.his eyes. ...\"She wanted to speak.to.me.before she went..that is why she called. She wanted to talk.to me..to.tell me she.was going,Ryan. She wanted to say.goodbye..Jen wanted to hear my.voice before she left..,\" Tracy kept repeating over and over again, until she was exhausted and fell asleep in Ryan's arms. Outside,it had stopped raining, and the moon was shining, bathing the world in its silvery light. The stars were twinkling, one star in particular, which was visible very prominently from their bedroom window, was shining especially bright.
