Max is my dear beloved and treasured cat for which we have had for 10 years but has just been diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy. He was given a life sentence of between 1 week and 1 month - that was 4 months ago...

He lives his life so carefree as he lays out in the sun,
definitely  a couch potato as too lazy to even run.
Watches birds in flight and his ears curiously prick up,
the only spurt of energy, as his hunting days letup.

I sit and watch my friend, I love him so much you see,
sitting proudly at my feet, a majestic fellow is he.
His heart is giving up, difficulty pumping blood around,
my tears overflow, knowing how sick he is now.

He has had his many lives after being hit by a car,
fracturing his sternum and displacing his heart afar.
One of luck and kindness of strangers that very day,
but he pulled through like a trouper to still live today.

His interest to the kitten, aloof for many days,
his nose out of joint for at least a month I say.
He tolerates her antics and lets her have her way,
occasionally will be friendly and let her in the play.

At night he climbs upon my lap and nestles for a pat,
if he knew of his demise he would be a different cat.
I can’t keep back the tears, a torrent in their flow,
so special, a friend, a confidant, I don’t want ever to let go.
