“I’m Fine.”

Pulling in
A strangled gasp
A heaving sob
She feels forsaken
To hurt to fight.
No tears have fallen
Though they frame her eyes
On the brink
They shimmer, and wait.
Her heart is lost
Much like fallen leaves
Caught in a harsh autumn’s wind
Cruel and unflinching
It twists and turns
With no relief
And no direction
Unable to find home
To look inside would be foolish
Bitterly she believes
She is empty, bare
Nothing there but darkness
Nothing left but scraps
Ravaged by lies and betrayal
Which have coursed through her veins
Running poison
To her heart
For which she knows no antidote
She curses herself
For being so foolish
Angrily attempts
To brush her sorrow away
And summoning all
Of the strength that she has
She stretches her face
Into what should be a smile?
“Are you alright?” They all ask her
“I’m fine.” All she says
