when you're so small and the world's so big and the dreams you seek are so far away...

How distant do those purple mountains seem
When spotted through some strands of flaming grass
So soft and sweet, like clouds asleep on Earth
Through darkness, cold, and hunger I must pass
How dare those mountains sleep while I do toil
To struggling meet their lofty summit peak!
Defeat near drowns me. No one hears my screams.
From home I came with fruitless dreams to seek
Although upon those mountains, dear, I'm sure
My pain shall cease, my sufferings melt to joy.
A song will begin in my throat and fly
The world below, where I 'most quit, a toy
Shall seem when standing on the mountains, proud
Though earth and grass around with doubts do teem
How near the mountains are to those who dream!
