IS MUHAMMAD IN HEAVEN OR HELL?

The truth about Islam has been one of the world’s best-kept secrets. But things have changed. With the advent of the Internet, it is now impossible for Muslims to keep the dark teachings of Islam a secret. People are now becoming aware of the true nature of Islam and Muslims are unable to silence everyone. The entire structure of Islam is built upon the belief that Muhammad was mankind’s greatest prophet. As such, we would expect Allah to reward him with heavenly bliss immediately upon his death. Yet, Islam itself teaches that following his death, Allah’s greatest prophet descended into Hell. Consider now the evidences provided by Islam.

The Qur'an teaches that all Muslims, including Muhammad, will go into Hell?

Each time when Muslims make a reference to Muhammad, they say “Peace be upon him.” They say this to bless and honor Muhammad. The command to add this blessing after mentioning Muhammad’s name is based on the Qur’anic injunction that is found in Surah 33:56:

Lo! Allah and His angels shower blessings on the Prophet. O ye who believe! Ask blessings on him and salute him with a worthy salutation. (Pickthall)

However, in order for Muslims to send their blessings upon Muhammad, they must know exactly where their Prophet is right now. It might come as a shock for Muslims to know that according to the most authentic Hadith in the Muslim world and substantiated by a Qur'anic verse, their beloved Prophet is in Hell. Yes! The Prophet of Islam is in Hell. And together with him are his pious followers who have passed away in death till now. And Muslims who are living now will also share the same destination when they die. Unbelievable? Examine now for yourself what the Qur'an and authentic Islamic sources teach on this very crucial subject.

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 12, Number 770:

Narrated Abu Huraira: The people said, "O Allah's Apostle! Shall we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?" He replied, "Do you have any doubt in seeing the full moon on a clear (not cloudy) night?" They replied, "No, O Allah's Apostle!" He said, "Do you have any doubt in seeing the sun when there are no clouds?" They replied in the negative. He said, "You will see Allah (your Lord) in the same way. On the Day of Resurrection, people will be gathered and He will order the people to follow what they used to worship. So some of them will follow the sun, some will follow the moon, and some will follow other deities; and only this nation (Muslims) will be left with its hypocrites. Allah will come to them and say, 'I am Your Lord.' They will say, 'We shall stay in this place till our Lord comes to us and when our Lord will come, we will recognize Him. Then Allah will come to them again and say, 'I am your Lord.' They will say, 'You are our Lord.' Allah will call them, and As-Sirat (a bridge) will be laid across Hell and I (Muhammad) shall be the first amongst the Apostles to cross it with my followers. Nobody except the Apostles will then be able to speak and they will be saying then, 'O Allah! Save us. O Allah Save us.'

There will be hooks like the thorns of Sa'dan in Hell. Have you seen the thorns of Sa'dan?" The people said, "Yes." He said, "These hooks will be like the thorns of Sa'dan but nobody except Allah knows their greatness in size and these will entangle the people according to their deeds; some of them will fall and stay in Hell forever; others will receive punishment (torn into small pieces) and will get out of Hell, till when Allah intends mercy on whomever He likes amongst the people of Hell, He will order the angels to take out of Hell those who worshipped none but Him alone. The angels will take them out by recognizing them from the traces of prostrations, for Allah has forbidden the (Hell) fire to eat away those traces. So they will come out of the Fire, it will eat away from the whole of the human body except the marks of the prostrations. At that time they will come out of the Fire as mere skeletons. The Water of Life will be poured on them and as a result they will grow like the seeds growing on the bank of flowing water...”

Muslims may find the above narration incredible. Again, this shows the ignorance of Muslims regarding their religion. There is no ambiguity in this Hadith. It clearly states that Muhammad and his followers are in “Hell.” According to this Hadith, Muhammad is not in heaven but in “Hell,” awaiting for the arrival of the “Day of Judgment” to get into heaven. And he will be the first to cross the bridge with his followers to go to heaven. Please note, this bridge (As-Sirat) is “laid across Hell” and serves as an exit to heaven. Since the bridge is “laid across Hell,” Muhammad has to be in “Hell” for the Hadith to speak of him as being among the first to use it to come out from there.

The “Day of Resurrection” or “Qiyamah” refers to the time of the end. This means, even as you are reading this article, Muhammad is in “Hell” awaiting to be rescued. This fact is further substantiated by the admission that even pious Muslims who pray regularly will be consumed by fire, leaving only the “marks of their prostration” untouched. According to the above Hadith, the bodies of those in “Hell” will be consumed by fire. “At that time – the Day of Resurrection – they will come out of the Fire as mere skeletons.” In corroboration with the above Hadith, the Qur'an says that all Muslims – every single one of them – will be taken to Hell.

Surah 19:71: “It is the inevitable decree of your Lord that every one of you will be taken to hell.” (Sarwar)

There is not one of you who shall not pass through the confines of Hell.” (Dawood)

And the very next verse tells us:

Surah 19:72: “Then (Thumma) We shall rescue those who kept from evil, and leave the evil-doers crouching there.” (Pickthall)

Afterwards (Thumma) we will deliver those who shall have been pious, but we will leave the ungodly therein on their knees.” (Sale)

The word “Then” (Thumma) used in this verse exemplify that there is a chronological order of events. First the entry into Hell. “Then” being saved from it. Note the wordings of Surah 19:72: “We shall rescue those who kept from evil, and leave the evil-doers crouching there.” You only “rescue” someone who is in some kind of danger. However, this rescue operation will only take place on “Judgment Day.” Until then – for centuries – pious Muslims will be consumed by fire. Only the dark spots on the skin of their foreheads caused by years of prostration to Allah will escape the effects of the fire. This is Allah’s reward for their faithful prayers to him.

Sahih Muslim, Book 001, Number 0349:

They (the angels) would recognise them in the Fire by the marks of prostration, for Hell-fire will devour everything (limb) of the sons of Adam except the marks of prostration. Allah has forbidden the fire to consume the marks of prostration. They will be taken out of the Fire having been burnt

Al-Jalalayn’s Tafsir on Surah 19:71 (“Not one of you but will pass through it: this is, with thy Lord, a Decree which must be accomplished”), gives the following clarification:

Not one” means that there will be none. “Of you” means all people. “But will pass through” means the entry into hell. “A decree which must be accomplished” means it is a certainty and a judgment from which Allah will not relent. (Translated from Arabic) Source: www.al-islam.com.

Tafsir by Ibn Kathir on Surah 19:71:

Surah 19:71: “Not one of you but will pass through it: this is, with thy Lord, a Decree which must be accomplished.”

Imam Ahmad narrated that Sulaiman Ibn Harb narrated that Khalid Ibn Sulaiman narrated that Kathir Ibn Ziad Al- Barsani narrated that Abu Sumaya said, "We differed about the meaning of ‘Passing through it’ (wari-duha). For some of us said that no believer will enter hell and others said all (people) shall enter it and then Allah will save those who have done righteousness. Then I met Jabir Ibn Abdallah and I informed him that we differed about the meaning of, ‘Pass through it,’ and he replied that, “Everyone shall enter it.” (Tafsir by Ibn Kathir on Surah 19:71, Translated from Arabic)

Another Tafsir by Ibn Kathir on Surah 19:71:

Narrated by Abdel Razak, narrated by Ibn Ayena narrated by Amru who told us that he heard Ibn Abbas feud with Nafi Ibn Al-Azraq regarding the meaning of, ‘Entering (Al-wurood).’ He said it meant ‘Entering (Hell),’ but Nafi disagreed. Thus Ibn Abbas read (Surah 21:98) “‘Verily ye, and the gods that ye worship besides Allah, are but fuel for Hell! To it will ye surely will enter (Wardan),’ and asked did they enter or not? He also read (Surah 11:98) ‘He will go before his people on the Day of Judgment, and lead them (Awrada-hum) into the fire: but woeful indeed will be the place (Wird) to which they are led (Al-mawrud)!’ Did they enter or not? As for you and I, we will enter it but let us see if we will exit from it and I don’t see Allah taking you out of it because you lie (regarding its meaning).” Nafi then laughed.

Narrated by Ibn Jarir, narrated by Atta who stated that Abu Rashid Al-Harury, who is called Nafi Ibn Al-Azraq, said, "They (the believers) will not hear hell’s roar." So Ibn Abbas responded, "Woe to you! Are you insane? What of Allah’s verse (Surah 11:98) ‘He will go before his people on the Day of Judgment, and lead them (Awrada-hum) into the fire,’ and also the verse (Surah 19:86) ‘And We shall drive the sinners to hell being lead (Wirdan)’? And also the verse (Surah 19:71) ‘Not one of you but will pass (Waridu-ha) through it’? By Allah, the supplication of those who lived previously used to be, ‘O Allah take me out of hell fire peacefully and allow me to enter paradise victorious.’" (Tafsir by Ibn Kathir on Surah 19:71, Translated from Arabic) Source: Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Saudi Arabia.

Who is Ibn Abbas? Ibn Abbas (618 C.E.–687 C.E.) was a paternal cousin of the Prophet Muhammad. He is revered by Muslims for his knowledge. He was an expert in Tafsir (exegesis of the Qur'an), as well as an authority on the Islamic Sunnah. He knew exactly how Islamic terms are understood and applied. And according to him, all Muslims, including Muhammad, will enter and taste Hell-fire. Let the Qur'an itself give us a classification of the “Islamic Hell”:

Surah 74:28-30: “It leaveth not (any thing unconsumed), neither doth it suffer (any thing) to escape: It scorcheth men’s flesh: Over the same (are) nineteen (angels appointed).” (Sale)

It is sad that all Muslims are waiting for this “fiery destiny.” As stated, Muhammad is in Hell. But what about Jesus Christ? Concerning Jesus Christ, the Qur'an itself testifies in Surah 4:158:

But Allah took him (Jesus) up unto Himself and he is in the heavens.” (Hilali-Khan)

Jesus is in Heaven. And concerning the followers of Jesus Christ, the Qur'an states:

Surah 3:55: “Behold! Allah said: ‘O Jesus! I will take thee and raise thee to Myself and clear thee of the falsehood of those who blaspheme; I will make those who follow thee superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection.” (Yusuf Ali)

Allah said: "O Jesus! I am going to recall you (from your mission) and raise you up to Myself. I will clean you of those who rejected you and exalt your followers above the unbelievers until the Day of Resurrection; then to Me shall be your return and I shall judge those matters in which you have been disputing. (F. Malik)

The above statement in the Qur'an reveals the superiority of those who follow Jesus.Those who follow Jesus are Christians. Of course, this does not apply to those who are Christians in name only but to those who are his true faithful followers. These are the ones who will be exalted. They are exalted, not because of any personal superiority on their part but on account of truly submitting to the teachings of Christ as it is revealed in the Holy Bible.

According to the above Qur'anic verse, Christians will be “exalted” or made “superior” until the Day of Resurrection. The Day of Resurrection or Qiyamah refers to the “time of the end.” For Christians to be exalted until the time of the end, it logically follows that true Christianity must remain as a religion in this world until the “time of the end.” For true Christianity to remain as a religion in this world until the “time of the end,” true Christians must be present in this world until the “time of the end.” For true Christians to be present in this world until the time of the end, they must have a righteous standing with God until the “time of the end.” For them to have a righteous standing with God until the time of the end, they must be guided righteously until the “time of the end.” For them to be guided righteously until the time of the end, the Holy Book in their possession must remain true until the “time of the end.”

For the Qur'an to testify that the followers of Jesus Christ will be made superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection,” the above detailed stages regarding the favorable standing of Christians must be accomplished precisely. And this would vitally include the integrity of the Bible which is in their possession.

The above Qur'anic verse proves beyond any doubt that the Holy Bible is indeed sufficient for the outworking of the Christian’s salvation, both now and in the future. Thus, we can be confident that the teachings of the Bible will remain as the authoritative guidance for mankind for all eternity. Therefore, the claim that the Qur’an was sent to replace the Bible or that the Bible is corrupted is a deliberate lie. Concerning the Holy Bible, it is stated:

2 Timothy 3:16-17: All Scripture is given by the inspiration of God and is profitable for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for instruction in righteousness,that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.

If the Bible can provide such an encompassing knowledge of salvation for mankind, would there then be a need for another book to show us the truth about God? Islamic leaders discourage their followers from reading the Bible. Muslims will do well to consider the teachings of the Bible. Their eternal salvation depends on it. The path to salvation cannot be found in the path that leads you to Hell, even momentarily.

Sadly, most Muslims have chosen to follow the recitation of a single, 7th century illiterate whose book is the direct opposite of how God chose to reveal the way of salvation over a period of 1600 years by means of the inspired accounts of numerous prophets and legions of witnesses. Surah 19:71 must be extremely disturbing to Muslims, who can only look forward to Hell-fire immediately upon their death.

If Christians are made superior until the Day of Resurrection as the Qur'an itself testifies, where do you think will be their final destination? Muslims should seriously consider whom they want to follow, the one who is in Hell or the one who is raised up to be with God in heaven? And they must also consider whom they want to worship – Allah who promises “Hell-fire” or Jehovah who promises “Eternal life”? The difference between Allah of the Qur'an and Jehovah of the Bible is that Allah promises Hell-fire for his worshippers while Jehovah promises Eternal life. Allah, Muhammad, Islam and the Qur'an make it clear that “Hell” is a certainty for all Muslims. Does it have to be your destiny too? Certainly not. You can choose to follow the true God who will show you the way to everlasting life. However, Muhammad’s destination is not the only theological problem for Muslims to contend with. We will now look at another Islamic historical account of Muhammad that should trouble Muslims.

The Bewitched Prophet

The validity of Islam is closely linked to the reliability of Muhammad. The Qur’an testifies in a number of places that Satan will not be able to harm any of Allah’s righteous servants.

Surah 15:39-42: (Iblis) said: “O my Lord! Because Thou hast put me in the wrong, I will make (wrong) fair-seeming to them on the earth, and I will put them all in the wrong, - Except Thy servants among them, sincere and purified (by Thy Grace).” (God) said: “This (way of My sincere servants) is indeed a way that leads straight to Me. For over My servants no authority shalt thou have, except such as put themselves in the wrong and follow thee.” (Yusuf Ali)

This Qur'anic verse clearly proclaims that Satan will have no authority over Allah’s servants. If this verse is true, then it means that Satan or the demons will not be able to exercise any influence over Muhammad – the foremost servant of Allah. Thus, at no instant should Muhammad come under the power or the spell of the demons. This should be especially true during his career as the Prophet of Allah. This is the full inference of Allah’s reply to Satan in the above Qur'anic verse. However, the following Hadiths clearly show that Muhammad was bewitched:

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 54, Number 490:

Narrated By ‘Aisha: Magic was worked on the Prophet so that he began to fancy that he was doing a thing which he was not actually doing. One day he invoked (Allah) for a long period and then said, "I feel that Allah has inspired me as how to cure myself. Two persons came to me (in my dream) and sat, one by my head and the other by my feet. One of them asked the other, "What is the ailment of this man?" The other replied, 'He has been bewitched" The first asked, 'Who has bewitched him?' The other replied, 'Lubaid bin Al-A'sam.' The first one asked, 'What material has he used?' The other replied, 'A comb, the hair gathered on it, and the outer skin of the pollen of the male date-palm.' The first asked, 'Where is that?' The other replied, 'It is in the well of Dharwan.' “So, the Prophet went out towards the well and then returned and said to me on his return, "Its date-palms (the date-palms near the well) are like the heads of the devils." I asked, "Did you take out those things with which the magic was worked?" He said, "No, for I have been cured by Allah and I am afraid that this action may spread evil amongst the people." Later on the well was filled up with earth.

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 89:

Narrated By ‘Aisha: The Prophet continued for such-and-such period imagining that he has slept (had sexual relations) with his wives, and in fact he did not. One day he said, to me, "O 'Aisha! Allah has instructed me regarding a matter about which I had asked Him. There came to me two men, one of them sat near my feet and the other near my head. The one near my feet, asked the one near my head (pointing at me), 'What is wrong with this man? The latter replied, 'He is under the effect of magic.'

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 71, Number 660:

Narrated By 'Aisha : Magic was worked on Allah's Apostle so that he used to think that he had sexual relations with his wives while he actually had not (Sufyan said: That is the hardest kind of magic as it has such an effect)…."

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 75, Number 400:

Narrated Hisham's father: 'Aisha said, ", so he invoked Allah repeatedly requesting Him to cure him from that magic)."

The above Hadiths unmistakably state that “Magic was worked on Allah's Apostle” and “Allah's Apostle was bewitched.” How could evil overtake the “Seal of Prophets”? Why was Allah unable to protect his Prophet from the influence of the demons as he had promised in Surah 15:42? The verse states: “For over My servants no authority shalt thou (Iblis) have, except such as put themselves in the wrong and follow thee.” Since the Qur'an states that Satan can only exercise power over those who follow him, does not this prove that Muhammad was a follower of Satan?

Asbab Al-Nuzul by Ali ibn Ahmad Al-Wahidi, Q. 113-114:

(Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the Daybreak…) [113:1-5] The commentators of the Qur'an said: “The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, had a Jewish servant boy. The Jews approached him and kept after him until he gave them some fallen hair from the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, as well as a few teeth from his comb. The Jews used these to cast a spell of black magic on him. The person who was behind this was the Jew Labid ibn al-A'sam. He then put the hair in a well belonging to Banu Zurayq called Dharwan. The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, fell ill for a period of six month, during which the hair of his head fell off; he imagined that he slept with his wives when he did not, and was withering away without knowing the reason. As he was one day sleeping, he saw two angels coming to him. One of them sat at his head and the other at his feet. The angel who sat at his head asked: 'What is wrong with the man?' The second angel responded: 'A spell of black magic was cast on him'. (Source: Altafsir.com)

Ibn Ishaq, Sirat Rasul Allah:

From B. Zurayq: Labib b. A'sam, who bewitched the apostle of God so that he could not come at his wives.” (Ibn Ishaq, Sirat Rasul Allah – The Life of Muhammad –Translated by A. Guillaume, p. 240). Guillaume’s footnotes states that according to a Muslim scholar, the spell lasted for a year.

Lubaid bin Al-A'sam was a Jewish magician from the tribe of Bani Zaraiq. It is important to note that this incident occurred after Muhammad migrated and settled in Medina. Muhammad’s arrival in Medina took place during the thirteenth year of his prophetic career. This means long after he became a prophet, he succumbed to the control of demons. By this time Muhammad had accumulated a number of wives. Think for a minute, Muhammad is supposed to be receiving revelations from Allah and he is supposed to be the greatest among Allah’s prophets. Yet, Muhammad was so bewitched that for at least six months or even nearly a year he came under the control of demons and he believed he was having sexual relations with his wives, when in reality he did not do so. Details on this event are also provided in Ibn Sa'd's “Kitab al-Tabaqat al-Kabir” (Book of the Major Classes), Volume 2, pages 244 to 248. Here is a relevant quote:

The apostle of Allah fell ill. He was bewitched about women and food. ...There were eleven knots [in the hair from the comb]. The two Surahs no. 113 and 114 were revealed to him. No sooner did the apostle of Allah recited a verse than a knot loosened. When all of them were loosened, he regained his urge for food and women.”

Muslims take pride in saying that Surahs 113 and 114 cured Muhammad from the Jewish spell. Firstly, this claim is in itself an admission that Muhammad was bewitched. Otherwise, why was there a need to cure him from the influence of the demons? Secondly, a true prophet of God is not even supposed to be affected by sorcery in the first place. The Bible says that God’s servants will not come under demonic control such as sorcery because of the protection of Jehovah over them:

Numbers 23:23: There is no sorcery against Jacob. No magic can harm Israel.”

A man who fell victim to sorcery while declaring himself to be God’s greatest messenger can only be a fraud. Thirdly, according to Muhammad, seven dates are just as effective as Surahs 113/114 to ward off magic:

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 71, Number 664:

Narrated Saud: I heard Allah's Apostle saying, “If somebody takes seven 'Ajwa dates in the morning, neither magic nor poison will hurt him that day.”

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 15, Number 73:

Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah's Apostle never proceeded (for the prayer) on the Day of 'Id-ul-Fitr unless he had eaten some dates. Anas also narrated: The Prophet used to eat odd number of dates.

The “odd number of dates” shows how deeply Muhammad is ingrained in superstition. Now, notice the words of Muhammad’s prayer:

Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 41, Hadith Number 5036:

Narrated AbulAzhar al-Anmari: When the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) went to his bed at night, he would say: in the name of Allah, I have laid down my side for Allah. O Allah! Forgive me my sin, drive away my devil, free me from my responsibility, and place me in the highest assembly.

Questions for Muslims

(1) If the Qur’an is true that Satan will not affect those that are righteous before Allah, why did Muhammad come under the control of sorcery? Think carefully, does this not prove that either the Qur'an is wrong in its promised protection or Muhammad is not a true prophet? Note, either way you choose to answer this question, it still proves Islam false.

(2) What was Muhammad actually doing during the entire year that he thought he was having sexual relationship with his wives when he did not? After all, for him to actually believe he was really having sex with his wives implies that he was pleasuring himself in some unknown manner, otherwise how could he sense that he was actually engaging in intercourse? Is this not somewhat degrading for someone claiming to be a prophet of God? And why would Allah permit his Prophet to be humiliated in this way, thinking he was engaging in sex when he did not?

(3) Why would Allah allow Muhammad’s wives to go on without having sex with their husband for nearly a year when he could have simply healed him from the very start?

(4) Can we trust that for almost a year Muhammad was not receiving “revelations” when he was under the spell? Can Muslims provide a conclusive statement from the Islamic texts, which say that he was not receiving inspiration during the period when Satan had him under his control?

(5) Would not this imply that Satan is more powerful than Allah seeing that he was able to bewitch Muhammad for nearly a year even though the Qur’an says that he would not be able to harm Allah’s righteous servants? Or are we to assume that Muhammad was not righteous, which explains why Allah permitted him to be controlled by the demons?

Amazingly, several Muslim expositors even admitted that Muhammad had a demonic visitor named al-Abyad (“the White”) who would appear to him in the form of Gabriel.

Burhan al-Deen al-Halabi, Al-Sira al-Halabiyya, Volume I, p. 58:

Some of the commentators mention that Muhammad had an enemy from among the demons of the jinns whose name was the White. And he use to appear to him in the image of Gabriel. But some people objected to that because people would not then trust the revelation. But we say that God bestowed on the prophet the necessary knowledge by which he would discern between Gabriel and the demon.”

It seems easy for the demons to connect to Muhammad. The above commentary says that “God bestowed on the prophet the necessary knowledge by which he would discern between Gabriel and the demon.” This claim is a lie. A well-known incident that took place during Muhammad’s prophetic career shows that he could not tell the difference between Satan and “Gabriel.” This famed event is known as the “Satanic Verses.” The records of early Muslim sources show that Muhammad, at one time, delivered a revelation from Satan believing that it was from “Gabriel.” He himself admitted that Satan had put words in his mouth making him compromise with idol worship. Allah later removed the verses and the Qur’anic recital was changed. Can the Word of God contain the words of Satan, even for a moment within its pages? We do not think so.

The Satanic Verses

One of the most embarrassing events in Muhammad’s life occurred when Satan cast his words upon the tongue of Muhammad. Centuries earlier, the Holy Bible cautioned:

1 John 4:1: “Beloved ones, do not believe every inspired expression, but test the inspired expressions to see whether they originate with God, because many false prophets have gone forth into the world.”

This proves that inspired expressions can come from sources other than God. They can come from demons. Persons claiming to be “prophets” could be deceived by demons if their calling is not from the true God. Could Muhammad be a victim of such demonic influences? Could demonic powers have been at work in Muhammad’s teachings? The answers to these questions are vital for all sincere Muslims who seek to know the truth about Islam. It is imperative to use Islamic sources to answer these questions lest we are accused of being discriminatory.

The History of al-Tabari: That evening Gabriel came to him and reviewed the Surah with him, and when he reached the two phrases which Satan had cast upon his tongue he said, “I did not bring you these two.” Then the Messenger of God said, “I have fabricated things against God and have imputed to him words which He has not spoken.” (The History of al-Tabari –Muhammad at Mecca)

Narratives involving this incident can be read in the very early Biographies of Muhammad by:

When Muhammad was preaching in Mecca, he did not win very many converts. But he wanted those from his tribe to accept Islam, and he was hoping to receive a Qur'anic verse that would help them. Then one day he got the “revelation” he was looking for. We will now consider the detailed account of this incident as recorded in Al-Tabari's history, Al-Ta'r?kh, Volume I:

The prophet was eager for the welfare of his people, desiring to win them to him by any means he could. It has been reported that he longed for a way to win them, and part of what he did to that end is what Ibn Humayd told me, from Salama, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Yaz?d ibn Ziy?d al-Madan?, from Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Quraz?:

When the prophet saw his people turning away from him, and was tormented by their distancing themselves from what he had brought to them from God, he longed in himself for something to come to him from God which would draw him close to them. With his love for his people and his eagerness for them, it would gladden him if some of the hard things he had found in dealing with them could be alleviated. He pondered this in himself, longed for it, and desired it. Then God sent down the revelation. 'By the star when it sets! Your companion has not erred or gone astray, and does not speak from mere fancy…' (Q.53:1) When he reached God's words, "Have you seen al-L?t and al-'Uzz? and Man?t, the third, the other?’ (Q.53:19-20) Satan cast upon his tongue, because of what he had pondered in himself and longed to bring to his people, 'These are the high-flying cranes and their intercession is to be hoped for.'

When Quraysh heard that, they rejoiced. What he had said about their gods pleased and delighted them, and they gave ear to him. The Believers trusted in their prophet with respect to what he brought them from their Lord: they did not suspect any slip, delusion or error. When he came to the prostration and finished the chapter, he prostrated and the Muslims followed their prophet in it, having faith in what he brought them and obeying his command. Those mushrikun of Quraysh and others who were in the mosque also prostrated on account of what they had heard him say about their gods. In the whole mosque there was no believer or kafir who did not prostrate. Only al-Wal?d bin al-Mugh?ra, who was an aged shaykh and could not make prostration, scooped up in his hand some of the soil from the valley of Mecca [and pressed it to his forehead]. Then everybody dispersed from the mosque.

Quraysh went out and were delighted by what they had heard of the way in which he spoke of their gods. They were saying, 'Muhammad has referred to our gods most favourably. In what he has recited he said that they are "high-flying cranes who intercession is to be hoped for".'

Those followers of the Prophet who had emigrated to the land of Abyssinia heard about the affair of the prostration, and it was reported to them that Quraysh had accepted Islam. Some men among them decided to return while others remained behind.

Gabriel came to the Prophet and said, O Muhammad, what have you done! You have recited to the people something which I have not brought you from God, and you have spoken what He did not say to you.' At that the Prophet was mightily saddened and greatly feared God. But God, of His mercy, sent him a revelation, comforting him and diminishing the magnitude of what had happened. God told him that there had never been a previous prophet or apostle who had longed just as Muhammad had longed, and desired just as Muhammad had desired, but that Satan had cast into his longing just as he had cast onto the tongue of Muhammad. But God abrogates what Satan has cast, and puts His verses in proper order. That is, 'you are just like other prophets and apostles.' And God revealed: 'We never sent any apostle or prophet before you but that, when he longed, Satan cast into his longing. But God abrogates what Satan casts in, and then God puts His verses in proper order, for God is all-knowing and wise.’” (Q.22:52)

We will also consider the same incident in Ibn Ishaq’s Sirat Rasul Allah:

Now the apostle was anxious for the welfare of his people, wishing to attract them as far as he could. It has been mentioned that he longed for a way to attract them, and the method he adopted is what Ibn Hamid told me that Salama said M. b. Ishaq told him from Yazid b. Ziyad of Medina from M. b. Ka`b al-Qurazi: When the apostle saw that his people turned their backs on him and he was pained by their estrangement from what he brought them from God he longed that there should come to him from God a message that would reconcile his people to him. Because of his love for his people and his anxiety over them it would delight him if the obstacle that made his task so difficult could be removed; so that he meditated on the project and longed for it and it was dear to him. Then God sent down "By the star when it sets your comrade errs not and is not deceived, he speaks not from his own desire," and when he reached His words "Have you thought of al-Lat and al-`Uzza and Manat the third, the others", Satan, when he was meditating upon it, and desiring to bring it (sc. reconciliation) to his people, put upon his tongue "these are the exalted Gharaniq whose intercession is approved". When the Quraysh heard that, they were delighted and greatly pleased at the way in which he spoke of their gods and they listened to him; while the believers were holding that what their prophet brought from their Lord was true, not suspecting a mistake or a vain desire or slip, and when he reached the prostration and the end of the Sura in which he prostrated himself the Muslims prostrated themselves when their prophet prostrated confirming what he brought and obeying his command, and the polytheists of Quraysh and others who were in the mosque prostrated when they heard the mention of their gods, so that everyone in the mosque believer and unbeliever prostrated, except al-Walid b. al-Mughira who was an old man who could not do so, so he took a handful of dirt from the valley and bent over it. Then the people dispersed and the Quraysh went out, delighted at what had been said about their gods, saying, "Muhammad has spoken of our gods in splendid fashion. He alleged in what he read that they are the exalted Gharaniq whose intercession is approved".

The news reached the prophet's companions who were in Abyssinia, it being reported that Quraysh had accepted Islam, so some men started to return while others remained behind. Then Gabriel came to the apostle and said, "What have you done, Muhammad? You have read to these people something I did not bring you from God and you have said what He did not say to you." The apostle was bitterly grieved and was greatly in fear of God.

So God sent down (a revelation), for he was merciful to him comforting him and making light of the affair and telling him that every prophet and apostle before him desired as he desired and wanted what he wanted and Satan interjected something into his desires as he had on his tongue. So God annulled what Satan had suggested and God established His verses i.e. you are just like the prophets and apostles. Then God sent down: "We have not sent a prophet or apostle before you but when he longed Satan cast suggestions into his longing. But God will annul what Satan has suggested. Then God will establish his verses, God being knowing and wise". Thus God relieved his prophet's grief, and made him feel safe from his fears and annulled what Satan had suggested in the words used above about their gods by his revelation "Are yours the males and His the females? That were indeed an unfair division" (i.e. most unjust); "they are nothing by names which your fathers gave them" as far as the words "to whom he pleases and accepts", i.e. how can the intercession of their gods avail with Him?

When the annulment of what Satan had put upon the prophet's tongue came from God, Quraysh said: "Muhammad has repented of what he said about the position of your gods with Allah, altered it and brought something else." (The Life of Muhammad: A Translation of Ibn Ishaq’s Sirat Rasul Allah, with introduction and notes by Alfred Guillaume [Oxford University Press, Karachi, Tenth impression 1995], pp. 165-167;)

Muhammad clearly admitted to being deceived by Satan to engage in idol worship. Although he later realized the consequences of what he had done, this does not diminish the fact that he was deceived by Satan. This incident shows that he could not distinguish between the words of Allah and the words of Satan. He received a revelation from Satan which he proclaimed as a message from Allah. The message was not only false but also demonic. We are also told that Muhammad’s personal desires were partly responsible for the interjection of the Satanic Verses. This fact alone places the inspiration of the Qur'an on a dangerous position and makes its inspiration highly distrustful. If this is true, then it is an admission that whenever a convenient revelation was given to satisfy Muhammad’s personal desire, such as the time when he wanted to marry his adopted son’s wife, it must be Satan who – taking advantage of Muhammad’s personal desire – interjected those verses in the Qur'an. Thus, the desire of Muhammad which was on the tip of his tongue was turned into verses by the interjection of Satan. Could the verse approving Muhammad’s marriage to his son’s wife be another verse by Satan?

Tabari, VI:107: Satan cast a false Qur'an revelation on the Messenger of Allah's tongue.”

Now, take note of Allah’s response to the Satanic Verses:

Surah 22:52: “Never sent We a messenger or a prophet before thee but when He recited (the message) Satan proposed (opposition) in respect of that which he recited thereof. But Allah abolisheth that which Satan proposeth. Then Allah establisheth His revelations. Allah is Knower, Wise.” (Pickthall)

Never did We send a Messenger or a Prophet before you, but; when he did recite the revelation or narrated or spoke, Shaitan (Satan) threw (some falsehood) in it. But Allah abolishes that which Shaitan (Satan) throws in. Then Allah establishes His Revelations. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise.” (Hilali-Khan)

Imagine, in the above Qur'anic verse, Allah is in effect saying, “Don’t worry about it Muhammad, all prophets proclaim satanic messages from time to time.” Why would Allah make “light” of a prophet speaking the words of Satan as the words of Allah? While Surah 22:52 confirms that the Satanic Verses episode did really occur, at the same time it also shows that Allah openly lied that all of God’s prophets in the past were also influenced by Satan. This blatant lie is deliberately told by Allah to cover the humiliation of Muhammad who submitted to satanic influence. Surah 22:52, which falsely claims that all of God’s prophets succumbed to satanic influence, is in itself a satanic verse woven into the very fabric of the Qur'an. To excuse his Prophet’s transgression, Allah defamed all the prophets of God by claiming that Satan has also casts words into the messages they were inspired to receive. Allah did not provide the slightest proof to substantiate his wicked defamation of Abraham, Moses, Jesus and many other faithful prophets of God in the Holy Bible.

The nature of Allah is identical to that of Satan. Both try to assail the divine qualities of the true God. They depict God as being powerless in preventing Satan’s interference with his messages. Additionally, they also humiliate the prophets of the true God. They do this by resorting to lies and deception. However, there is still more to the lies of Allah. Long before the incident of the Satanic Verses, Allah warned Muhammad of the kind of punishment that would befall him should he ascribe any false sayings to Allah:

Surah 69:44-46: “And if he (Muhammad) had forged a false saying concerning Us, We surely should have seized him by his right hand (or with power and might), And then certainly should have cut off his life artery (Aorta).” (Hilali-Khan)

And if he had fabricated against Us some of the sayings, We would certainly have seized him by the right hand, Then We would certainly have cut off his aorta.” (Shakir)

Tafsir Jalalayn on Qur’an 69:44-46:

And had he, namely, the Prophet, fabricated any lies against Us, by communicating from Us that which We have not said, We would have assuredly seized him, We would have exacted vengeance [against him], as punishment, by the Right Hand, by [Our] strength and power; then We would have assuredly severed his life-artery, the aorta of the heart, a vein that connects with it, and which if severed results in that person’s death.

When Muhammad attributed Satan’s words to Allah, why did not Allah punish him as he had promised to do so in the Qur'an? Allah’s failure to punish Muhammad should not be taken lightly by Muslims. This failure to punish Muhammad is an extremely serious matter considering the fact that the warning in these verses to punish is exclusively directed to Muhammad and no one else. Since Muhammad was the medium to both receive and transmit the messages of Allah to mankind, the warning of death as a punishment for ascribing “sayings” to Allah that did not come from him, was only meant for Muhammad. However, Allah not only failed to carry out the punishment that he himself specified in the Qur'an but he also made light of Muhammad’s sin. Not even a rebuke was given to Muhammad. Instead, Allah provided Muhammad with an excuse. This proves that not only Allah is a deceiving deity but he is also untrustworthy.

Allah excused Muhammad’s sin by saying, “Never did we send a Messenger or a Prophet before you, but; when he did recite the revelation or narrated or spoke, Satan threw some falsehood in it.” (Surah 22:52). In effect, Allah is saying that the imputing of Satan’s words into the messages of Allah is a common occurrence among all the prophets of God and therefore it is not a major concern. If this is true, why did Allah then warn of a punishment of death in Surah 69:44-46 for the same kind of offense that was so common to all the earlier prophets of God? Is not the punishment of death intended only for those who commit serious or unforgivable sin?

The easy imputing of Satan’s suggestion into the mind of Muhammad is further revealed here:

Surah 7:199-200: “Be indulgent O Muhammad and favour forbearance… And if Al-Shaytan entices you by suggesting divergence or discord secretly to your mind, do not consent nor be actuated, but commit yourself to Allah…” (Al-Muntakhab)

Surah 7:200: “And if a false imputation from the Shaitan afflicts you seek refuge in Allah; surely He is Hearing, Knowing.” (Shakir)

The vital issue about the Satanic Verses is the fact that Muhammad was unable to distinguish the voice of Satan from Allah’s voice. Could there then be other verses in the Qur'an that he assumed were from God but were really from Satan? If Satan can easily put words upon his tongue, what faith can we put in a man who is so easily led astray by Satan. Remember, even a Jewish magician was also able to exercise demonic control over the “Seal of the Prophets.” According to the laws given to Moses by the true God, Muhammad must be put to death as a false prophet. In the Hebrew (Jewish) Scriptures, if a prophet spoke anything in the name of Jehovah that was not from him, that prophet must be put to death.

Deuteronomy 18:20: “‘A prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything that I have not commanded him to speak or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet must be put to death.’”

Allah, who easily excused Muhammad’s serious sin, cannot be the true God. The failure of Allah to chastise Muhammad is one thing but to continue to inspire the very same person who had succumbed to the inspiration of Satan is quite another thing. One of the proofs that Muslims provide to claim that the Qur'an is miraculous is the challenge that no one is able to produce a Surah like it. This challenge is found in the Qur'an itself:

Surah 2:23: “And if ye are in doubt concerning that which We reveal unto Our slave (Muhammad), then produce a surah of the like thereof.” (Pickthall)

The Qur’an also claims that even if all of the jinns and mankind were to gather together to produce something like the Qur'an they would not be able to do so. Allah challenged anyone, including the Jinn to produce something similar to the Qur’an:

Surah 17:88:“Say: Verily, though mankind and the Jinn should assemble to produce the like of this Qur’an, they could not produce the like thereof though they were helpers one of another.” (Pickthall)

Before we proceed on, take note that the Qur’an identifies Satan as “one of the Jinns”:

Surah 18:50: Behold! We said to the angels, "Bow down to Adam": They bowed down except Iblis. He was one of the Jinns, and he broke the Command of his Lord. Will ye then take him and his progeny as protectors rather than Me? And they are enemies to you! Evil would be the exchange for the wrong-doers! (Yusuf Ali)

Well, the Satanic Verses discredit the claim that no one could “produce a surah like it.” Satan was able to produce a message that resembled the Qur'anic verses so closely that Muhammad himself could not tell the difference. Otherwise, Muhammad would never have accepted them as the Word of Allah. Satan led and Muhammad followed.

The Satanic Verses also discredit Islam’s claim that Muhammad was sinless. Accepting idolatry and polytheism, even briefly, is a serious sin. Muhammad succumbed to idolatry and polytheism while claiming to be God’s greatest prophet. This event shows a great failing in his life and it proves that he was a sinner like any other person. The evidences provided here is sufficient to cast doubt on both the Qur'an’s claim of divine inspiration and Muhammad’s reliability as a prophet. A man who admittedly proclaimed verses from Satan and fell victim to sorcery while declaring himself to be God’s greatest messenger cannot be trusted. Therefore, it is justifiable for us to reject the Qur'an as the Word of God and Muhammad as the Messenger of God.

It must be pointed out that the Satanic Verses event is not something made up by non-Muslims. It is recognized as an authentic event by the great early scholars of Islam. Early Muslim historians, in an astounding display of honesty and integrity, admitted that Muhammad was indeed deceived by Satan. In doing so, these early scholars and historians of Islam have given us all the evidence we need to prove that Muhammad was a false prophet. Not only was this event recorded by the earliest Islamic sources available on Muhammad’s life but also the men who recorded them were devout Muslim scholars. They were the defenders of Islam. They were genuine Islamic scholars who spent their lives studying, analyzing, and writing about Muhammad and Islam. These sources also provide chains of narration (isnad) showing that the event is traceable to the earliest Muslims. The vital lesson that Muslims must learn from this account is that Muhammad cannot be a prophet of God. It will be wise for Muslims to seek out and identify the true Prophet of God. It is therefore vital for Muslims to examine the life of another Messenger of God – Jesus of Nazareth. We will now consider one of Jesus’ many encounters with the demons:

Mark 1:21-27: They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. And they became amazed at his way of teaching, for there he was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the teachers of the law.Just at that immediate time there was in their synagogue a man under the power of an unclean spirit, and he shouted,saying: “What have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know exactly who you are, the Holy One of God.”But Jesus rebuked it, saying: “Be silent, and come on out of him!”And the unclean spirit, after shaking him violently and yelling at the top of its voice, came out of him screaming.Well, the people were all so astonished that they began a discussion among themselves, saying: “What is this? A new teaching! He even orders the unclean spirits with authority, and they obey him.”

Contrary to the claims made by Allah in Surah 22:52, Jesus had complete authority over the demons. For the record, none of the prophets of Jehovah who were recipients of his messages was ever influenced by Satan. And none of the messages that they received was at any time influenced by Satan. Can Muslims provide the name of a single prophet of God in the Bible who spoke the words of Satan? There is not one. Not a single one of them compromised the Word of God to gain converts as Muhammad did. If you have to choose between Muhammad and Jesus, is it not sensible to trust the one who terrified the demons with his presence rather than the one who came under their influence? Would it be wise to follow a man who came under the inspiration of Satan? Muhammad was thoroughly misled by Satan. Regarding Jesus, Al-Baidawi stated:

Allah bestowed on him a special assignment and made his miracles a reason for his preference above other messengers. They were clear signs and great wonders unequalled in number by any other.”

Surah 2:253: “We gave clear miracles to Isa son of Marium.” (Shakir)

A true prophet will not fall prey to the demons. Muhammad’s own wife testified that he was bewitched. And she is not his enemy. Given such clear evidences of Muhammad’s subjection to the demons, it is extremely difficult to take this man’s claims as a prophet seriously. And Jesus warned his followers in Matthew 24:11: “And many false prophets will arise and mislead many.” The evidences provided by Islamic sources themselves strongly prove that Muhammad was a false prophet. Even the Disciples of Christ were protected from the demons and they had power over them.

Luke 10:17: Then the seventy returned with joy and said: “Lord, even the demons submit to us by the use of your name.”
