The silence screams at me

From the shadows

That creep over my floor.

Love letters,

Hate letters,

Scattered over wood

Rubbed raw

From many years

Of dazed confinement.

Words,

Scrambled in my shattered mind,

Try to form

Coherent sentences.

Scarlet tears seep

From jagged lines

That cover my frail body.

Can you hear it?

The feeble beat

Of an unwilling heart,

Filling the still

For its last few moments.

And then it takes over –

That awful screaming silence

That weighs down your lungs

Until you can’t breathe.
