The shadow is coming.
Rolling in over the hills,
Like a swarm of locusts
Swooping down
On a ripe corn field.

The sun’s warming fingers,
Trying, unsuccessfully,
To pry apart
The spreading quilt of darkness.
The rose’s petals curl inward,
Trying to protect itself
From the unsparing onslaught.
The poppies shudder and wilt.
Like an unstoppable wave,
The darkness crashes down.
Suffocating all in its path.
He stands there, alone, in the darkness
The shadowy hues distort and disfigure.
His attempt to fight; a mockery.
In this nightmare,
The precipice awaits; daring and taunting.
Would that I could be more than a sullen face,
Epitomizing, not fighting, the darkness.
Would that I could lift the quilt
Grab him,
Shake him,
And send the shadowy forms scurrying,
Back to their dark master.
