As I step out of my apartment into the cool, damp street at the start of the day, I hear something strange. Well actually, It's not what I hear, its what I don't hear. It is something that just isn't normal to be occuring in such a metropolitan area, but it has been for the last few months. It is dead silent. Not a single engine running, or a pidgeon flapping its wings as it takes off. Nothing at all. I take a deep breath as I survey my surroundings, keeping an eye out for anything suspicous. But there is nothing that wasn't there yesterday. The same green minivan parked across the street, a kids bike lying a little beyond that. That dark blue mustang I always wanted was still there, parked in my neighbors driveway, with the broken windsheild and red splattered body. My neighbor is still lying beside the right side door, his skin is pale and his body lifeless. His head is blasted into pulp, smeared across the driveway, and all over the car. Just the same as it had been for the past two weeks. I shake my head in disgust, even if I had gotten used to seeing it everyday, it still makes me naseaus. I walk back inside to gather my supplies for the day, shutting the metal reinforced door behind me and locking it, even if I am going to be inside for just a minute. I grab my favorite backpack I got for school on christmas. But that was forever ago, in a different time. Hell, it was in a different fucking world, it seemed. I pack the essentials, flashlights, batteries, food, water, a map of the city and suburbs, and plenty of amunition. I grab the glock my father had when he was a police officer and put it in the holster on my belt, and I grab my lucky baseball bat, stained red from use, the one I had hit my first homerun with in middleschool. I smile thinking about that day, my Dad was so proud of me. I walk back out the door, deadbolting it shut from the outside, so nothing can wander inside. I set on walking down the street, heading towards the nearest supermarket that I hadn't already visited during previous excursions.

As I near my best friends house a few blocks down, I notice something moving inside. It's probably just the curtain, I think to myself, but I keep watching. The movement is very jerky, nothing like the fluid movement of a curtain flowing in the wind. I approach the small house, my bat in hand, ready for anything. The door was already cracked open, so I lightly pushed it in with the bat, to avoid making too much noise or to draw any attention. EEERRRRRRRRRRRRHH. The door makes a loud screeching noise, probably because the hinges had rusted from no use in weeks. There is a shuffling noise coming from down the hall, something fell off a desk, and I hear glass break with a loud crash. \"Oh shit, what the hell was that?!!?\" I say out loud. \"Hello?\" I whisper out to the room. \"Is there anyone here?\" No response. I slowly walk towards the room, and I see what broke. It was a mirror and shattered glass is lying all in the doorway of the room. I glance into it to try and help me see what is in the room. Red. All I see is the color red in the fractured piece of mirror, red on the walls, and red on the mirror. I inch around the corner, bat ready for the strike, and I see it suddenly. A pool of that red substance, which I now am positive is blood, surrounding a body, or what is left of a body, lying right in the middle of my friends room. That long, brown hair, those white slip on vans with drawing of random monsters and such were all that of my friends. The white canvas of the shoes had been stained red by his own gore. I feel like puking, seeing my best friend for thirteen years lying there in such a muddled heap of human remains, it is the worst thing I have ever seen. If he has been dead for what looks like a few days, he couldn't have made the noises and movements, I thought to myself. Right as I think this, I see a dark form in the corner of the room, where the most blood is concentrated. It looks as if he is a drunk homeless person. His skin is pale, his eyes dark and bloodshot. His nose has a trail of blood that goes down to his mouth that mixes with the blood dripping from his lips, as if he had vomited it. His hair is mess, bits of decayed flesh mixed in, and there is a noticeable smell of sweat, blood, vomit, and decay. This man, or whatever the fuck he is now, doesn't want to have a nice chat, all he wants is me. And from the looks of his stare, I look delicious today. He surges towards me, making awful, gurgling noise, splattering blood from his mouth and howling animalistic noises. He is just about to grab me, but he trips over whats left of the best person I had known in my whole life. I pound the bat I had carried with me into the mans skull, there is a loud crunch accompanied by decayed brain matter and blood spraying all over me and the room. It is silent again. The monster that had attacked me lay on the ground, twitching, and still making those awful noises. I smash its skull in again, more gore splatters the walls, and the body is still. I just stand there, watching it to make sure he doesn't get up again. A few minutes pass by. After I am sure it is completely unable to get up again, I make my way to the kitchen for food. I look in the fridge first, the smell of soured milk and rotten meat wafted out into my nose, and made me throw up in my mouth. I slammed the fridge shut and took a deep breath of fresh air in to clear that wretched stench from my nose. I make my way to the cabinet for some more food, and find plenty of cans of beans and corn, not my favorite, but I can't really complain in a situation like this. I place all of the cans into my back pack, which was about six or seven, but there were plenty of empty cans lying about the kitchen, so I guess my friend or some scavengers had eaten them a while ago. I make my way to the counter of snacks he had, and there is some potato chips and pretzels, I want them, but I can't sacrifice space in my back pack for junk, I need real food. I open the chips and have one, just for the hell of it. I spot a stack of about five ramen noodle packs, and I grab them. They are filling and don't require much work to prepare, I learned that from my six months at college, before I dropped out. After I have scavenged what I could from the house, I made my way back to my friends room. I found a framed picture of me and him in the mountains by a stream we had taked back when we were in 7th grade. I take it out of the frame and put it in my pocket to remember him. I would pray for him in heaven, But I have long since given up belief in a \"merciful God\". Total bullshit. Who would do this to his own creation? I think about what has happened here, and I turn around and walk out of the house. Back on the street, I am a nervous wreck. I already have had a dangerous close encounter, and It had only been 30 minutes since I left my house, I need to step my game up if I want to survive, and that was only one walker. I glance at my watch, I had spent an hour in there, it didn't seem like it. I walked down the street towards Sams Club, a giant store that should have everything I should ever need for the rest of my life, in bulk. I walk down the street towards the business district, which has now become the seventh circle of hell. Fucking walkers everywhere. Sams club is the closest store to where I enter, so I guess I got lucky there. I only see a few walkers, spread across the parking lot, and a few in the doorway. I could probably avoid them if I wanted, and I don't want to risk it. I creep up the side of the store, and glance around the corner. Only three of them near the door, I can deal with this. I creep up behind a a women in a pink, dirt and blood stained dress, and bash her skull in with the bat, CRUNCH, blood sprays, and stains my bat with more battle scars. She topples to the ground silently, not arracting any attention from the others. I approach the second walker and slam it hard in the neck, which obviously broke it the way its head was dangling on its neck, but It wasn't dead yet, I knocked it down with a swift hit to the right knee, where it collapse and howled with pain, I them slammed my high-top Nike sneakers right into his head. The last walker was looking right at me, and let out the worst fucking noise I had ever heard. I was so loud, every other walker in the center looked, and when they saw me, a fresh meal, you know they wanted me bad. I slammed the bat against the loud fuckers head and he hit the wall, and between the wall and the bat, his head was crushed into confetti and pulp. I hurriedly smash the window out of the store and scrambled in, while every walker in town was trying to get a piece of my ass. I pushed some carts in front of the hole, and move some boxes. I hope that is enough to hold them off for a few minutes. I run to the food isle and grab whatever I can that isnt perishable, or will last long enought. Three jars of peanut butter, some more beans, corn, jars of honey, bottles of water. I throw it all in the bag and run to the back of the store. I hear a loud crash at the front of the store, which was bad, considering I didn't even had an escape route planned yet. Maybe they leave the back door unlocked. I slam into the door with my shoulder, and as I expected, its locked. \"Shit. SHIT!!\" The walkers are running down the isles to get to me, I see about a dozen or so of them, but there are plenty more out there waiting. I pull out the glock from my holster and pop one right between the eyes, with a satisfying sound of blood rushing from his head. I shoot the one in front of him in the shoulder, then the right eye, she collapses down, but there are still plenty more. I shoot the man in the front 3 times, but he keeps coming. \"Are you fucking invincible?!\" I shoot him in the ankle, and he collapses, still alive, but immobile. That will stop him for now. I shoot off a few more rounds and knock off a few more zombies, but now I have to reload, which is bad considering there are still five more walkers coming at me. The fight or flight instinct kicks in, I dash like mad to an isle about thirty feet away, they follow me. I have run into the bulk drinks isle, and I push a box into the isle, and hide behind one in the shelf. The stupid fuckers run right past me, without noticing anything. I wait a few minutes to make sure it is clear, and peak my head out to be positive its clear. There is one at the end of the isle about twenty feet away, but the other end in clear, which lead to the front of the store. I dash out to the front where I am confronted with atleast forty walkers outside, ten inside, and who knows how many walking towards the store from other places. I am completely fucked. I turn around, a dozen or so are approaching me from there. They have me surrounded. There is no way I am making it out here alive. I take the bat and slam one into the ground, which instantly kills it. The others creep towards me faster. They are now all on me, biting at me. One claws my arm, deep. Blood flows from the wound, as I yell out in pain. I push the bat horizontally into the crowd of walkers in front of me. The front few fall back onto the others. I just bought myself enough time to reload. As I slide the spent magazine onto the ground, I pull out a new one, which I notice only has five rounds in it. More than enough. The crowd is back at me, biting at my neck. One bit into my arm, this is the worst pain I have ever felt. I work my arm up above the crowd and and level it at my temple. I close my eyes and cringe in pain from the assault of the walkers. I take a deep breath, and squeeze the trigger.
