Business Plan article 4, 2011©

My kid said “hey dad, “Jimmy and I are going to set up a lemonade stand on the corner”.  “That’s a great idea,” I said.  Every kid has to experience it, I said to myself.I thought back when I was a kid and had done  the same thing.

Great idea, I said,  but I’m going to help you guys out, so it can be a great success”.  “To start with you need a mission statement and a business plan”.  “What’s a mission statement and business plan”?  “Go get your buddy and meet me at the kitchen table, and I’ll explain”.

When they came into the kitchen I had paper and pencils waiting for them.  “A mission statement is a short statement that should guide your actions and be what your business is about, plus the ultimate goal of your business”. “A business plan is a set of goals that covers everything your business is about and your plan in reaching those goals”.  “It’s sort of astep by step guide”. “Do you understand”?  They both nodded with blank looks on their faces.

That evening I asked, “How are you kids doing on your mission statement and business plan”?  “We’re still working on them”.  I looked at the two sheets of paper.  The first one was the mission statement.
