With its frequent lack of interesting activities, high school seemed to drag on for an eternity. An occasional prank served as a crutch to help pass the time. The chemistry teacher, possessing a strong sense of humor, would prove to be one of the more interesting people to target with the jokes.

During my sophomore year in highschool, I enrolled in metal working class. Intended to teach the skills required for using tools such arc welders and oxyacetylene torches, the course was moderately popular among the boys. Oddly, only one other student enrolled in the class, one of my friends I hung around with. As the semester progressed, we were assigned various assignments requiring the use of an electric arc welder. While cutting a sheet of metal using an arc welder, I stumbled across an unexpected side effect. While cutting a piece of metal, large quantities of smoke were produced. The air becoming thick, caused the shop teacher to request both of us to open windows and let fresh air into the shop. At that moment, one could hear the clicking sound as the gears in my brain began to turn, hatching a devious plan. Creeping around the corner into my classmates welding stall, out of shop teacher’s view, I quietly explained my scheme. Convincing my friend to take part in the plan was a simple matter, requiring little effort.

With only two students in the class, it was common for the shop teacher to take a break. Wandering off to the teachers lounge, he would leave us to work on our projects in solitude. Aware of the fact we could leverage his absence to our advantage, we decided to wait for the best opportunity. The following day, we patiently waited until the instructor departed the shop as usual. Quickly closing the windows, we set about using the arc welders to cut metal at a furious pace. Several minutes passed as the air slowly became thick and clouded. Eventually filling the room with smoke, we ran outside to see if our plan would come into fruition.

Stepping onto the football field, we focused our gaze at the chemistry classroom on the second floor. As seconds ticked by, we kept close watch on the classroom emergency exit door. Nearly a minuted passed before the fire escape exit door opened, revealing a rather flustered looking chemistry teacher. Desperately trying to remove the rising clouds of smoke from his classroom, he placed an electric fan in the doorway. Students, opening the windows in the classroom, attempted in vain to vent the wispy clouds of smoke.

Unable to contain ourselves, we fell to the ground in laughter. The chemistry teacher, hearing our outburst, shook his fist in my direction while shouting, “you’re in my class this afternoon you know… payback time is coming!”

Ah, but it was all well worth while. Writing an extra report on the subject of oxidation was a small price to pay for seeing his classroom fall prey to our industrious antics! Take that Chemistry 102 class, welding class just owned you!
