During my college days, one amusing girl was foolhardy enough to go out with me briefly. Taking a literature class at the time, she asked for my help with writing a poem. Being a theater major, she quickly set about emoting an example in a rather regal manner. As she spoke, her words evoked a sense of a gentle flowing rhythm filled with uplifting tones of hope. Still in the rebellious young male lion phase of life, I wasn’t about to be caught dead talking poetry, girlfriend or not. With an evil smirk, I rattled off a terse rejoinder of cynical words. Whacking me on the back of the head, she told me to get serious. Then, pausing momentarily , she reconsidered and quickly scribbled our joint creation down on paper. Much to my surprise, the poem possessed an interesting balance of innocence and cynicism. Having long since forgotten the words, I’ve written the following poem in such a manner as to induce a similar sense of emotions.

When Dreams Come True

Graceful eagle flying high in the sky

With lofty dreams of reaching the sun

Powerful wings stretched forth

Growing ever stronger, never giving up

Each passing day soaring farther into the blue

Joyously nearing the goal

Eagle flies too close to the sun

Burns to a cinder, falls to the ground
