Four years ago, Andy lost his whole family in a horrible car crash. He believes that he is the cause since he was the one that was driving. No matter how many times the police told him that it was the driver in the other car who is to blame, he still wouldn't believe it.

Along with his family, he also lost his first and only girlfriend in the crash. He remembers it all to well of that night and is reminded of it everytime he goes to bed.

They were driving down the highway and it was dark out. His two younger siblings, that were 12 and 6 at the time, were asleep in the very back and his parents were in the middle row of seats, talking. He agreed to be the one to drive the hour ride back which earned his girlfriend a free ride in the front.

They were just leaving a party and everyone but him were tired. He was used to staying up at night since he worked the night shift at the local Walmart. He was holding hands with his girl and chatting about college starting in a month.

He looked down for what seemed like only a second to find his dropped phone that was lodged under the brake pedal. He heard his girl scream and looked up quickly to see a truck coming right at him.

Acting on instinct, he swerved to the left (the truck being on the wrong side of the street) and ran off the road. Since the highway was built on a high hill, the car started rolling.

Andy was conscious for it all. He heard his mothers and girlfriends scream. He heard all the windows bust. He smelt the metallic smell of the blood all around him. He felt the car spinning. He heard, smelt, and felt everything until it all finally just... stopped.

"Ariel?" he asks, turning only his head to his girlfriend since the car was currently upside-down. "Ariel? Baby?" He saw the deep cut on her throat and knew that she didn't make it. Tears started coming to his eyes and he looked back to the rest of his family. "Mom? Dad?" Tears were silently coming out of his eyes now. "Bailey? Cole?" he called for his siblings. As he heard the sirens approaching, he started sobbing. He knew it right then: He had killed his entire family.

Today was the four year anniversary of his family and girlfriends death. New Years Eve. Ever since that day, he has always scowled at the mention of new years eve. For the past three years on the day, he would buy two cases of beer and chug them all in his apartment before passing out.

None of his friends stuck with him past the first year but Abi. All his friends said that he lost his humor and fun and didn't want to waste their time on someone who can't get over something that happened four years ago. What friends they were...

He contemplated on killing himself many times. Making all his guilt and remembrance disappear. But one thing, and one thing only, stopped him everytime. Abi.

She had stuck with him for the whole four years. She never called him boring or lame or a waste of time. Never turned him down when he needed a shoulder to cry on. Never waited for him to call but would call first. Never judged him when he did cry. And most importantly, never let him pull the trigger or take the pills, or jump, or cut himself.

She was the soul reason he was still alive today.

What Andy didn't know was that Abi was in love with him. She hated seeing him blame the car wreck on himself. Hated seeing him in tears. Hated seeing him when he was having a nightmare: not being able to stop moving and crying out unless he was wrapped in her arms. She has cried so many times when he was having one, knowing she couldn't do anything when he slept to help ease the pain.

She wanted to tell him so much that she loved him and wanted to be with him but she couldn't. He lost his first real girlfriend in that crash and knew he would probably never get over her. He was going to propose to her the next day and never got the chance.

But Andy had a secret of his own: he started falling for Abi. The problem was that he promised his Ariel that he would never fall for anyone again. He thought that if he got with another girl he would betray Ariel. Not only that but he also thought that something bad would happen to his next girlfriend too.

He had asked Abi what she thought about that. Did she think that Ariel would be mad or feel betrayed if he fell for another girl? Abi told him that she thinks Ariel would be happy for him to find someone that made him happy.

That was a week ago and Andy decided that he would tell Abi on New Years Eve his real feelings. If his heart was going to be crushed, it might as well be on that day right?

So currently he was sitting on his small couch waiting for Abi to show up. He was in nice, blue jeans and a black button up shirt. The shirt that Abi had told him she loved every time he had worn it. He had showered, shaved, and got a haircut for her.

Abi was currently outside Andy's door, smoothing out fake wrinkles on her dress she had worn. She had raided her entire closest trying to find something nice but not too dressy to wear to his house. She finally settled on a nice, black dress that reached below her knees and a pair of 2-inch high heels that were actually comfortable. She had curled her blonde hair when she remembered Andy saying that he liked her hair like that. She took a giant breath before knocking on the door.

Andy stood up and walked to the door. He opened it and his breath caught in his throat at the sight in front of him. Abi was beautiful and she had her hair curled the way he liked it.

Abi could barely believe the sight in front of her. Andy looked better than he had any day sense the accident. He looked stunning and she noticed right of the bat that he was wearing the shirt.

"Hey." she said, smiling.

"Hey." Andy replied, breathless still. He cleared his throat and continued, "Come on in." He moved to the side and Abi walked in and headed to the wonderful smell coming from the kitchen.

Andy closed the door and followed her to the kitchen. He leaned against the door post and watched as Abi walked around the kitchen getting the wine from the fridge. She held it up and raised her eyebrows, silently asking if that was okay. He nodded his head and watched as she popped the cork, loving how she acted like she was at home in his house.

Abi was secretly watching Andy as she poured the wine and her heart jumped when he actually smiled. She hadn't seem him smile in so long yet it looked like it has been there all these years.

They both sat down and ate the spaghetti that Andy, himself, had made. They talked about little things and Abi could've sworn she saw Andy smile two more times over dinner. When they were finished, Abi went to clean the table but was stopped by Andy's warm hand and shaking head.

"Don't worry about it." he said. "I'll get it later." Abi set the plates down again and let Andy grab her hand to pull her to the living room.

Andy sat down and pulled Abi down next to him. He turned to face her and looked right into her eyes. He tried to tell her with his eyes how much he feels about her.

Abi could swear that Andy was trying to tell her something with his eyes but she just couldn't figure out what it was. That was before she notice that he moved a little closer to her.

Andy decided that he was going to kiss her then talk. That way if she didn't like him back he would at least get a kiss from her. So that's exactly what he did. He leaned in and closed his eyes before gently pressing his lips to hers. He held it for a second before pulling back and started to speak, "Abi, last week when I asked you if you thought Ariel would be mad if I fell for another girl, I was talking about you. Sometime over these four years, I have fallen for you and I decided that I didn't want to keep it to myself. If you don't care about me in the same way then I can push them back and, maybe, find someone else. I don't want to ruin our friendship if we can't be more so I can just stay friends if you want. It's up to you..."

Abi was still shocked from the kiss and the words he said were slowly starting to form sentences in her brain. When she finally got what he was saying she looked up to meet his eyes and saw two main emotions. Fear of rejection and hope of acceptance. She smiled and put her hands on both sides of his face. She leaned in and kissed him just like he did her. She pulled back and spoke, "Andy, you have no idea how long I have wondered if you liked me back. I do like you like that and would love to be more than friends with you. I don't want you to push back your feelings or ever hide anything from me, okay?"

Andy felt overjoyed that she liked him back and wrapped his arms around her. Abi instantly responded and wrapped her arms around him too. They both pulled back at the same time and instead went in for a kiss.

A couple of hours later, they were both laying on the couch with Andy arm around Abi and the TV showing the countdown to New Years. Abi was slowly falling asleep in Andy's arms and Andy was smiling a genuine smile. The first one sense the accident.

Andy looked up at the TV as it was counting down from five. When it hit one, he heard the fireworks go off outside but none of that mattered. All that mattered was the girl in his arms.

"Happy New Years, Abi." he whispered to her.

"Happy New Years, Andy." she replied before falling asleep.

Andy gave her a kiss and fell asleep soon after. For the first night in four years, he slept happy and nightmare-free.
